      The Black Nose Buddha

To truly offer blessings to oneself, truly offer blessings to others. - stonepeace

A devotee wished to offer incense before her beautiful Buddha image.
Not wanting the fragrance to stray to others' shrines,
she made a funnel to direct the incense to her image only.
To her shock, this blackened the nose of her golden Buddha.

Comments : She had forgotten that the offering of incense is not for the Buddha to smell,
but to remind herself to become like to Buddha, to cultivate the "fragrance" of virtue that generously spreads in all directions to benefit all. The blackened Buddha image was thus a reflection of the ugliness of her selfishness. Under the "soot" of delusions though, lies her her radiant Buddha-nature still, awaiting to be uncovered.
