The highest discipline is to act and behave, as if one were in a crowd of people, when one is alone, however. This had been practiced by ancient Chinese, regardless of whether they were Buddhist or not. Confucius, for instance, was a stauch believer of this. There is much wisdom in it.
Truthfulness and sincerity. If one were to act decently only when people are around, such is not decency. It is hypocrisy. So, what is it, you want to be?
Besides, our eyes can't see non-humans. So, who exactly is one trying to deceive?
