ZDS BOD Meeting Minutes; Jan. 6, 2007
Present were Greg Anderson, Kim Howell, Michael Bolton,
Rich Wahl, Susan Weimer, Bob Wallin and Joe Montani,
Greg called the mtg. to order at 10:45 AM.
Kim reported about $9530 in our cash account, and a
value of about $4700 in the brokerage account. An
end-of-year financial "snapshot" report will be
given at the Feb. BOD meeting. Members should
receive "tax-" letters from ZDS in January summing
their 2006 donations.
It was deemed that ZDS does not need additional
listing of our Web Site address in our Qwest-DEX
Yellow Pages ad: that listing would cost about $15
per month. We also waive the Qwest link to our site
(about $25/mo.). Most parties who look for ZDS
perform a "Google" search, and our webmaster has
ensured that all the web-based search engines are
aware of ZDS, under a large host of varied key-word
Officers of the Board were officially designated:
serving second terms in 2007 are: President, Greg
Anderson; Secretary, Jim D'Elia; Treasurer, Kim Howell.
The new Vice President is Joe Montani; the new
Director at Large is Michael Bolton.
The 2007 BOD Alternates are Patty Kelly and Sue Weimer,
replacing Dan Dorsey and Michael Bolton from 2006; Alternates
are called upon to serve if a Board Member must resign during
Michael Bolton gave the Building Improvement
- decomposed granite was spread, mostly in the back yard and garden;
- zendo rotten fascia boards were replaced, primed, and painted;
- zendo front door and porch trim were painted;
- crumbling mortar on front of building was tuck-pointed and reparied;
- front entry walkway was sealed with epoxy paint
- accomplished some emptying and cleaning of yard shed and pump-house.
Much of the woodwork, brick work, and painting was
generously done by Jerry Chadbourn, to whom the Board
extends thanks and appreciation.
A sum of about $350 was authorized for insulation
and stucco to be applied to the back-room structure
to moderate the temperatures, both in hot and cold
seasons, for anyone working inside. The stucco
facing will also make the structure immune to further
damage by woodpeckers, and will help prevent water
infiltration at baseboard level.
The ceiling of the outdoor furnace and air-circulator
room is crumbling and falling and needs repair.
Purchase of an inexpensive (c. $300) lockable storage
shed for the yard is recommended.
The Committee recommends obtaining a new zendo stove,
either by donation or by purchase. Members will be
asked to be alert to used, professional stoves
becoming available, or may be asked to donate a
An energy-efficient refrigerator is needed to replace
the noisy kitchen zendo unit. It was noted that units
of recent manufacture use only one-third the energy of
five-year-old or older refrigerators, and new units
are much quieter. A freezer compartment is probably
not a necessity in the unit.
Parking-lot repair: we should make several requests
for cost estimates. We ought to proceed even before
the Neighborhood Association decides on how (or whether)
to pave our stretch of Martin Ave. If we give an eye
to the proper grading of the lot, we may avoid runoff
water infiltration at the base levelof the back-room
Regarding basic zendo fittings, it was noted that
some sitting cushions need outright replacement,
and others need re-stuffing. Our prior experience
with "Zen Home Stitchery" was one of slow service,
while "Dharmacrafts" was rapid, so we may make
cushion purchases from Dharmacrafts again.
A few padded folding chairs are recommended to be
obtained for zendo use. We may also be alert for
better, ergonomically designed chairs once we obtain
a few padded chairs as a stop-gap. The metal
folding chairs obtained for our annual Gala are not
appropriate for zazen.
We will announce a new policy of NOT using chairs on
the square cushion: this will extend the life of the
square cushions. Those using chairs for zazen will
be asked to remove the square cushion, and then to
replace it after their zazen is finished, and after
removing their chair.
We may look into obtaining a few sitting benches from
"Great Vows Monastery".
Next, the Board discussed the advertizing of sesshin.
Sesshin and zazenkai organizers should give MULTIPLE
notices to the sangha about upcoming zazen events:
by email, the Board requests (1), a first email
announcement, and (2), an email reminder; organizers
should also (3), post flyers at the zendo, and give
info to (4), the ZDS Secretary, and (5), the Webmaster.
It was decided that we ought to enable the YAHOO!
Group e-tree feature which allows our e-tree YAHOO!
Group to retain messages (our postings) at our YAHOO!
Group e-tree website address: this will thus become
an archive of past messages and enable any e-tree
member to read postings at any time. This will not
change the restricted list of people who have posting
priviledges, the "Group Owner" and "Moderators".
The Board will tentatively schedule future BOD
Meetings on the first Saturday of each month, subject
to change. We would like to publish the finalized
Minutes of the previous meetings by the 1st of each
Greg adjourned the Meeting at about Noon.
Notes taken, transcribed, and respectfully submitted
by Joe Montani (in the absence of the Secretary).
