      believe that just having a current limiting resistor is enough...

      All diodes (LEDS and non LEDS) have a PIV rating,
      i.e. Peak Inverse Voltage....

      If the voltage supplied is 12v, even with a CURRENT limiting
      resistor (no such thing as voltage limiting), AND the
      PIV of your LED is less than 12v (most are) then you
      run the POSSIBILITY of damaging the LED.

      Many LEDS may continue to work, but you are taking your
      chances...
