• I suggest you go to: www.ashlintrains.com and click on Helix Elevation Systems. They show 2 systems for z-scale, each set at 2% grade but for different radii.

and click on Helix Elevation Systems. They show 2 systems for z-scale, each set at 2% grade but for different radii. What you immediately see is there is a distinct difference in ramp clearance for the 2 helixes. The relationship between the height H needed from top of rail to top of rail in one circle, the grade slope S, and the radius R is H=2(Pi) x R x S . For a 2% grade, S= 0.02. One has to remember to include the thickness of what the helix is made from. For a 2 inch difference from top of track to top of track and 195 mm radius, you will have a grade of about 4%.

Probably the standard 195mm (just over 7" radius or ~15" diameter (center line) or about 18" overall, with clearances, structure framing, scenery, etc. Your are just asking to trouble trying pull tighter curves and 2+ % grades (mostly pulling power needed and traction slippage).
