I do a scan-and scale on the cards. It comes out pretty good. I haven't built the lighthouse yet, I'm currently using a Christmas ornament that I drilled out to put an LED in. It's bot to scale, but it's effective in looking far away due to a forced perspective.
(I did build the Tribune tower from these guys, with pretty good success. I use it as a placeholder until I get around to recreating it in plastic.
And don't forget to think outside the box - I used an HO smokestack for a Z tower for another kit-bash I'm doing. It might be a little narrow for your needs, but there's always O to grab materials from!
