Google has removed their satellite maps from their site that
previously gave you a choice of a street map or a satellite view of
      the same area.

They now have a "freebie" 'Google Earth' which has a 'thousand' more
features. I won't go into all the details as the "off topic"
      complainers will start complaining.

Where it is good for Z is satellite views as before of rail lines, BUT
in much GREATER detail. Now a new wrinkle is that the gound countours
can be read by scrolling the mouse over the map. For instance the
elevation of the big yard in NW Atlanta is easily determined from one
end of the yard to the other or you can follow the track elevations as
you steam along the Rocky Mountains.

You <<MUST>> have a fairly modern computer - say less than two years
old. Also you <<ABSOLUTELY MUST>> have a broadband connection as so
much data is coming at you. DSL really won't cut it, and dialup
forget it. If you have these two items, go to Google Maps and read
other suggested requirements and then download the FREE Google Earth
View program. The program and data is the absolute 'nuts' plus you
can do things on a map you never thought of before.
