    i got it ! i was using document.getElementById( win ).style.display= none instead of YAHOO.foo.panel.hide(); the latter closes the panel from where ever you

      i was using document.getElementById("win").style.display="none"
      instead of
      YAHOO.foo.panel.hide();

      the latter closes the panel from where ever you call the line.
