      PART 1
Heather sat in her car and stared at the flashing neon
open sign of the diner. Her fingers drummed along
aimlessly with the tune that she liked on the radio,
but whose title she could never remember. Glancing at
      the
Jeeps clock, she turned the radio down in annoyance.
It had been 45 minutes since her brother Lloyd had
phoned her. It was at least half an hour since then
that she had been sitting in the freezing cold waiting
      for his
scrawny ass to turn up. The engine whirled away,
pouring heat into the 4x4's cab. Five minutes later an
      old,
rusty, beat-up sedan came tearing into the parking lot
churning up snow in its wake.
'At last!' Heather sighed as she switched off the
      engine.
The sedan pulled up into a parking space across from
her, and Heather smiled as Lloyd almost fell out of
      his car
in his haste to get inside the cheap diner to meet
      her.
Never keep a lady waiting, Lloyd.
Heather let another 10 minutes pass before she decided
that her brother had waited long enough. Crossing the
parking lot herself, she walked to the front door and
went in. It was a typical diner; there was a jukebox
      in the
corner, and the whole place smelled like grease.
Unfortunately, it also looked like that same grease
      had moved
      itself over every surface.
      -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lloyd was sitting at the last table in the back. He
was sipping a steaming cup of coffee. How he drank
      liquids so
hot always amazed her. Walking quickly between the
tables, Heather only spoke when she was right on top
      of
      him.
      Hello, Lloyd.
She jumped back abruptly as his scalding coffee went
flying into the air almost landing on her.
Jeez, Heather! Dont do that! Lloyd gasped.
Grabbing the nearest napkin, he began to mop up coffee
heading for the table edge. Sliding into a seat across
from her brother, Heather laughed as Lloyd got all
      flustered over the mess.
      Neat freak, she grinned.
Dork, he retortedOh, that hurt. Stop worrying about
the mess. These places come attached with folks who
      must earn their keep,
Heather said, gesturing towards a sulky middle aged
woman who was already headed for the small coffee
      puddle.
Lloyd was Heathers older brother by two years, but
for some strange reason, Heather had always seemed to
play the role of older sibling. Lloyd composed
himself, and ordered more coffee for the both of them.
So, whats the big mystery? Heather said, referring
to the excited call Lloyd had made to her cell phone
      when
he asked her to meet him in this dump, another nuke
      go missing?
She burst out laughing again as once more he got all
      flustered.
Shut up, idiot! he said in an irritated whisper,
      You know thats not funny!
Turning around to make sure the sulky waitress was not
in hearing range, he continued, You of all people
should know how serious that was.
Yeah, yeah, but you of all people should know just
how much I love to torment you. Heather smiled, and
      took
a sip of her own scalding coffee. She decided she had
better be more serious. It wasnt like Lloyd to call
      her out
for brotherly love cups of coffee.
OK, So tell me what youre so secretive about. she
      asked, Is it the office?
Brother and sister both referred to the military base
where Lloyd worked as the Office for discretion and
personal safety. Lloyd was just a lab rat in a wing
where most governmental projects where carried out,
      but he
was an important lab rat, and moving up the ranks
fast. Heather was the only person outside of the base
      to know
just what went on in there, and was very lucky to
still be alive with that knowledge.
Needless to say, Heather and Lloyd shared a close
relationship. They had confided and relied on each
      other
since childhood. They had formed a bond unlike anyone
else Heather knew of. Both of them were mutants.
Lloyd had been born different. He had a small tail
removed, and some minor cosmetic surgery done when he
was an infant. Certain personal aspects, like his
tolerance for scalding food and an incredible learning
      rate,
marked him as different, but his mutation was not as
evolved as Heathers. She had discovered what she
      could
do when she was 15. Both of their parents had been
under the assumption that at least one of their
      offspring had
been born normal. They still thought that, as Heather
had never told them about her gift.
Lloyd referred to Heathers gift as hazing. As
children, they had spent hours pouring over old The
      Shadow
comic books, and marveled over the similarities of the
fictional characters power to cloud peoples mind,
      and
Heathers power. To haze, Heather used her mind to
change her face to appear as someone else. She could
blend into crowds by assuming a face that everyone
ignored because she appeared to others as if she
      belonged
there. She could also copy facial features from
photographs. Her face didnt actually change, but in
      peoples
minds, she appeared to them as the person Heather
wanted them to see. Lloyd had picked up hazing from
      the
shimmering light or haze that fell across Heathers
features as she changed her face.
Lloyds mutation, his superior mind, had worked him
into the high powered labs of the US government.
Heathers had worked her into crime and easy money.
      She had no complaints.
Lloyd waited for more coffee to arrive while
absent-mindedly twirling a knife. He leaned closer to
      Heather, and
      conspiratorially glanced around the diner.
I need you to help me out, he whispered.Simple
      enough.
Help you with what? She gave him a funny look.
      This.
Lloyd pulled out a small manila envelope from a pocket
in his jacket, and slid it across the table. Opening
      it,
Heather scanned the contents. Spider writing and blue
diagrams filled the neatly folded tech paper. She
      flipped
through the sheets to find some semblance of order or
sense, but finding neither, she said,
Very pretty Lloyd, but I thought you had already
      chosen wallpaper?
      Give me that!
Lloyd grabbed the paper from her hands. A couple of
sheets slid to the table and he quickly snatched it up
before the waitress could see. He mumbled a thanks
for the coffee as he stuffed the papers back into the
envelope. Heather picked up her cup and blew on her
      fresh coffee.
Youre totally helpless, you know that? Lloyd said
between gulps of his own coffee.
Well, Heather quipped, some of us dont come
equipped with well endowed cranial cavities, you
      know. She
was beginning to get annoyed with all this cloak and
dagger shit. Can you please just tell me what is
      going
      on?
Lloyd took a deep breath and again moved closer to his
      sister.
Since the trouble in the Middle East, he began, all
of our projects have been moved ahead of schedule and
given new revision and priority dates. Anything with
any destructive power was given the go ahead for
development. That was until five months ago when they
found something fantastic. At that time, I had landed
      a
position with a team working on stealth weapons and
met Doctor Cruin. He used to work for the Canadian
government, but came over to us when potential
development on his projects were ignored.
Fiendish Canadians, Heather said sarcastically under
      her breath.
Ha, ha. Anyway, he showed me a design for a bomb that
is totally unlike anything you have ever heard of. He
designed it, and has been working on it for the last
twelve years. Now he feels the time is right for it to
      come
      into being.
Not another bomb, Lloyd. You lot obviously havent
      learned your lesson yet.
No, listen to me, Heather. Dropping this bomb, just
one, on any enemy power source will leave that power
source totally drained. Power plants, factories,
turbines, anything that has an energy field. Any kind
      of power
source will be drained for four miles around. Im not
going to go into any technicalities with you.
      Oh, goody, Heather mumbled.
But I can say that an enemys power source will be
stopped literally in its tracks. We can just walk in
      with
      basically no resistance.
      Youre kidding me?
Minimal lives lost. Imagine that. War with almost no
bloodshed. Simply just walk in, sort out the trouble
      andSimple enough.
Help you with what? She gave him a funny look.
      This.
Lloyd pulled out a small manila envelope from a pocket

Minimal lives lost. Imagine that. War with almost no
bloodshed. Simply just walk in, sort out the trouble
      andleave.
Its too simple, Lloyd. Theres no way that war will
      ever be that simple.
Look, I didnt ask you here for a moral debate. The
reason I called is because I need you to help me get
      this
into the second stage of testing. Both the Doctor and
I cant get close enough to the Generals in charge to
      show
them the importance of this project. They are more
interested in larger guns and bigger bangs. General
Portmens on base next week and his right-hand captain
is not going to be there.
Heather started to shake her head no.
Look, Lloyd continued, all I need is for you to go
to a meeting. You look like Captain Wallace long
      enough
to show the General our diagrams and leave. The
General is smart enough to know what hes looking at.
      Thats
      it. Walk in, walk out.
Youve had too much coffee, Lloyd.
Please, Heather, he begged, This is really
      important.
Ill think about it, she said taking a sip of her
      coffee.
      PART 2
Her stomach churned with anxiety. This was taking a
lot longer than she assumed it would. Heather was
      sitting
in General Portmans office waiting with Captain Resta
as the General sat at his desk reading Lloyds papers.
She thought she would scream if that clock in the
corner didnt stop its incessant ticking. Heather
      focused on the
clock and tried to will it to tangle its long
pendulums with one another. Pity her power didnt work
      like
      telekinesis.
She began to silently curse Lloyd for having a soft
      place in her heart.
The dry scratching sound of paper turning suddenly
      stopped, Uhmmm, Captain Wallace?
The sound of her name made Heather turn her head
sharply towards the tall lean man behind the desk.
Various paraphernalia, papers, awards, and such,
decorated his desk. He also had several large game
      heads who
stared down from his walls. One statuette in
particular caught her attention. It was a warrior
      standing with a
large wolfhound cast in bronze. Heather wondered how
      much it cost.
Captain Wallace, are you with us?
Yes, sir! she answered, but thought, Stay focused,
      dammit!
Good, said General Portman. Let me just say that
this is a superb report. Short and to the point. Im
      not
afraid to say that I'm interested in its potential and
I am willing to give it the go ahead. He nodded his
      head to
confirm what he had just said.
This guy was so army. Just like the movies. Heather
took a deep breath to stop her heart from exploding in
      her
      chest.
Thank you, sir, she said. He fell for it, hook,
line and sinker. Better not tell Lloyd just how
      impressed he was
with the report though. He would never shut up about
it.From the corner of her eye, Heather saw Captain
Resta stand up, General Portman? May I just state
      that her
calculations on this entire project is founded on one
material which is impossible to get.
What the hell was he talking about?
Lloyd had warned her about this guy. Captain Resta was
one of those men who couldnt bear the thought of the
army turning from troops into button pushers. He had
opposed the planning of Lloyds project from its
      infancy,
vying for more direct approaches, keeping his eye on
the science wing, just to see what the lab rats were
      busy
cooking up. He had already been waiting in the
reception area when Heather had arrived in her Wallace
      Haze.
She had thought that his silence was a good thing,
maybe he even admitted to himself that this bomb was a
      good
idea, but apparently he had put some effort into his
objections. He was now prepared to try and sway the
      General.
Is this true, Wallace? the General asked swiveling
away from Resta who was now glaring at Heather from
      his
      corner
Shit! Lloyd better have a good one prepared for
      this.
Practically impossible, sir. Improvise when faced
with a lack of knowledge. Try to think of what all
      Lloyd
      had said.
Captain Resta enjoys his bit of histrionics. He would
take great pleasure in shutting this project down.
Heather ignored the fuming man in the corner.
The truth is, sir, that Captain Resta has shown
disfavor with this project from the very beginning,
      she added in
a smug sounding voice. Was she pushing it to far?
The fact that the General had used her name instead
of Captain must be a good sign that he favored her.
I have never stated any disfavor with this project
Captain Wallace, countered Resta, but now that you
mention it, yes, I do think it rather ill founded.
      I, Heather started.
Would you care to explain why you do not approve of
this project, Captain Resta? General Portman
      interrupted.
Yes, sir, Resta said, First, this project will
cause a huge eruption in the ranks of the military,
      and not just
army, sir, but Navy, Air Force and most definitely
within the UN when they find out about it. Secondly,
      as I
mentioned earlier, Captain Wallace forgot to mention
that the metal adamantium is probably the rarest and
most expensive element on the planet. Not to mention
the fact that there is no record of any being found in
      the
      last twenty years.
Now it was Restas turn to look smug.
Shit, he had done his homework! Adamantium!? Oh yes,
the reactor metal or something. Heathers mind
worked overtime. Why would Lloyds project require
something he couldnt get a hold of?
Sir, if I may explain, Heather began.
Go ahead, Wallace. And please sit down, Captain
Resta. You look like you are about to take off. The
Generalgestured towards Resta, who moved back down
      into his seat.
Sir, continued Wallace, the team that worked on
this project would not have spent thousands of dollars
      of
the militarys money if they had not fully validated
their research. One of the key members of the team had
previously worked for the Canadian Government in many
top-level projects, one of which involved
adamantium. He has stated that he can easily reacquire
      the substance from this source.
That sounded good enough. Lloyd would just have to
make something up to cover her lies.
Heather stared at the generals face trying to read
his expressions, but he gave nothing away.
      I see, Captain Wallace.
Oh, no! He was using her full name again!
Should you not have acquired this element from its
source before having me pass the go-ahead? If I have
learned one thing in my years, it is to never count
your chickens before they hatch. But Im still willing
      to give
my go ahead for this project if you can assure me that
this adamantium will be available in time for all
      key
      demonstrations.
Heather stood up as he handed the folder with Lloyds
      papers back to her.
Yes, sir. The Project will be on schedule as
indicated in the report. May I have your authorization
      on the
      procurement of the source, sir?
Heather held the file to her side trying to look
      military and hopefully, sound military.
Yes, full authorization and endorsement is given to
this project until such time as I deem it not viable.
      I expect
you to handle it in its entirety, Captain Wallace.
Turning to Resta, the General said, Captain Resta,
you are to assist Wallace with the adamantium's
procurement. I trust you to give her the full
cooperation of your troops. I suspect that the source
      is not within
our walls, and will probably require some force. That
is acceptable as long as no trace of our involvement
      is left
behind. Doctor Cruins project status is now labeled
classified, as is the mission to retrieve the
      adamantium. I
expect to receive full reports. You are dismissed.
Sir! Heather and Resta snapped in unison.
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Resta sped up to catch Heather as she marched out of
the room and down the corridor to find Lloyd in the
      labs.
You cant do this, he hissed at her. Its not
      right, and you know it.
Heather stopped mid-stride to face him. She hated male
power mad pricks like this guy. She had been itching
      to
put him into his place since the time in reception
area. Glaring down on Resta using her five foot, nine
      inch
frame to push him up against the wall, she bellowed at
      him.
And just what is not right about it? Are you so self
centered that you cant face the fact that maybe
      youre
losing a cushy job because the military might not need
as many people? Never mind the fact that who knows
how many lives will be saved?
Now she sounded like Lloyd. You know thats not what
Im talking about, Resta said. What happens to us
      when someone else figures it
out? Our army will be decimated due to your little
project. Who needs us when you can flick out the enemy
with one bomb? Neat and tidy until they use it on
you. He pulled away from her and stormed off.
Heather sighed and carried on to the labs. Why were
      men were like that?
Minimal lives lost, no bloody wars, just one simple
fly over with one small bomb.
Heather grimaced; it sounded a bit like Hiroshima or
Nagasaki. No lives lost. Or was it was the fact that
      huge
armies would no longer be needed that destroyed power
      mad mongrels like Captain Resta?
Heather was deep in thought when she reached Lloyds
      lab.
      PART 3
Heather soon found Lloyd. He was waiting expectantly
for her at the back of the lab room where they kept
      the
      animals.
Why on earth did they have animals in this place?
Heather didnt ask. Cats, along with sheep, monkeys,
pigs, dogs, horses, and who knew what else they felt
      like hurting.
She didnt like it, but she kept her mouth shut.
Hopefully, she would soon be out of here.
Lloyd was overjoyed to hear the Generals acceptance.
      Heather mentioned the adamantium.
Oh, that, Lloyd said. You were right about the
Doctor. He does know where theres a source and he was
      just
waiting for the project to be approved before he got
      it.
Well you could have told me that," snapped Heather.
I almost lost it back there, but pulled it together
      right
before Resta could tear you down. The General said
that I must take some of Restas men to get the
      source.
I bet he didnt like that, Lloyd grinned.
Hell no. I thought he would kill me then and there.
      Heather laughed with Lloyd.
They quickly dropped their banter as Dr. Cruin came
around the corner. Heather had met him last week when
Lloyd had introduced her as Captain Wallace to him.
She still almost shuddered when she saw him, even now,
      a
week later. Three long scars ran across the Doctors
face. They ran from the beginning of his hairline
      where the
dark hair had died and turned white down his face to
      his neck.
No one had ever asked him where he got them or what
      had happened.
Heather greeted him, Good morning, Doctor.
Lloyd coughed in mid laugh. Ah, Doctor Cruin. Captain
Wallace has just brought us good news. The project
has been given the green light.
The Doctor looked at Heather and smiled, his scars
moving up his face like snakes.Yes, Heather said, I
was questioned about your adamantium source, though. I
hope you can produce it or our
project is not going to go much further than this
      afternoon.
Heather wanted to get this entire thing over with as
soon as possible. She still meant to blast her brother
      for
getting her involved with this crazy project. Walk
in, walk out? Yeah, right. She was now even more
      involved
than she ever intended or wanted to be.
Oh yes, Captain, said Doctor Cruin. I can get it,
but I will need the use of some men. I havent fully
explained the method of obtaining the adamantium yet,
but it should be relatively simple with the right
      equipment.
Sure. Heather cut the Doctor off. She was not
interested in the finer details, just the facts.
      We've got the men,
some of Restas troops, but can you get us to this
base where your source is located?
Oh, Captain, its not a base were after, chuckled
the Doctor. Its much more simpler that that. Just
      one man
and our Generals weapon will be on the production
line. One rather special man and our problems are
      over.
Cruin smiled and walked away as brother and sister
      both stared at him.
