I wish to check my site which I have archived on my Hard Drive, for
Orphan Files. I have printed Page 10 of the Xenu manual and am using
xenu version 1.2g. I suspect that Page 10 leaves out prior steps. For
example do I just launch Xenu then immediately select Options |
Preferences | Orphan Files or does the instructions assume that I have
done something prior to this? If so what? Even if I assume that the
instructions assume that I have done a prior scan of the entire site,
if I try this first I am still unable to get a list of Orphan .jpg
files. Where do you think that I am going wrong? Thanks. Brian Tozer

            Hi Tilman

            Thanks for your reply.

The Xenu manual/instructions that I was referring to is at:-

            http://members.chello.nl/f.visser3/xenu/

which I found by following the link in the Xenu Help.

I have just performed a scan on my total site, on my Hard Drive, with all the options selected, and level 999, then selected no report, and in the over 2000 lines of results there is not a single entry in the status column, or anywhere else, of the word “Orphan” or any indication that any of my many orphan .jpg files are being found.

            Am I missing something?

            Thanks

            Brian Tozer

Just make sure that "Orphan files" is checked before launching the

I have just tried the new version 1.2h on a site I have archived on my Hard Drive.

Xenu finds over 2000 URLs but there is not a single orphan entry in the Status column.

Like the previous version, when I reply YES to the request for a report, nothing is generated.

In the options dialoge box I have selected 30 threads, 999 levels, and only the Orphan files box ticked.

I know that there are many orphans, but none are found.

On both version 1.2g and 1.2h no report is displayed, either when I answer YES to the request immediately at the conclusion of scan, or by pressing "R".

In both cases I see the erupting volcano graphic for a couple of seconds, but there is no change to the display.

I have the "Orphan files" box ticked in the "Sleuthing Options" dialogue box.

However, by examining the Xenu.ini file I found that the report was actually created, what it was named, and that it was saved in the system Local Settings/Temp folder, but was not displayed.

I could copy it from there and save it elsewhere for viewing.

I hope that this info is usefull.

That won't help you - it depends of your ISP. If you access your site
with ftp, you would know the settings. (The current dialogbox is also
somewhat improved.) But you don't need it for LOCAL checks.

                                    Good Morning.
I am experiencing some seious problems with my website www.vacuumcleanershop.com - mainly a drop in traffic which seems to coincide with the large number of files/pages the Googles' Webmaster Tools sees as "Not Selected" when it crawls my website. The website contains approximately 2500 pages, yet Google tells me there are close to 11,000 pages that are "not selected" in the index.
Xenu did find some problems that were related to a social networking script I had installed. I removed that script and those problems went away. However, Xenu is also telling me that I have approximately 7300 orphan files. Again, this is from a site with only 2500 pages. Most of the so called Orphan Files are what look to be legitimate url's in the format: http://www.domainname/directory/URLname.htm so I don't see how they could be orphans.
I got similar results using another program called InSpyder to check for orphan files and it ran for 3 hours until I finally gave up. Some of these files were also legitimate looking but many were malformed with six or more subdirectories before the html page.

Thank you in advance for any help,
                                    Paul

orphan file, that you think isn't, or doesn't exist at all. Note that -
as the report tells you - "Links that aren't spidered (e.g. webforms and
dynamically generated links) will appear as orphans in this list."
