Social Studies Forum investigates "Beyond the Fire"
- War has killed two million children in the last decade alone. Four million
children have become disabled and hundreds of thousands serve as child
soldiers. Nearly half of all refugees worldwide are under 18, and across the
globe, an estimated 25 million children have been uprooted from their homes
as a result of war.
BEYOND THE FIRE (http://www.itvs.org/beyondthefire/) introduces the
real-life stories of 15 teenagers, now living in the U.S., who have survived
war in seven war zones. These stories tell of loss, hope, fear, strength and
despair-and most of all, resilience.
Join us in an investigation of this powerful resource for middle and high
school students in the TAPPED IN Social Studies forum, set for 8 p.m.
Eastern (5 p.m. Pacific), February 8, in TAPPED IN (http://www.tappedin.org
Joining us for this important session will be Sesh Kannan, who created and
produced the site. We'll look at various stories and features on the site,
as well as easy-to-use lesson plans that you can use with your students. At
the end of the session, we hope you'll gain a greater appreciation and
concern about this issue.
As always, TAPPED IN help desk personnel will be on-hand to assist new
users. It's suggested that new users log in at least 10 minutes prior to
the session in case they need assistance getting to the session.
Persons with questions or wanting more information are invited to e-mail
Michael Hutchison off-list.
