Army intervenes to stop Nigeria clashes

Nigerian soldiers have been deployed on the streets of Jos city to
prevent ethnic clashes which killed at least 20 people on Friday.

More than 300 were injured and thousands were forced to leave their
homes after rival ethnic and religious groups clashed in the central
Nigerian city, the Red Cross said on Friday.

Violent fighting between gangs of Muslim Hausas and mostly Christian
Beroms were triggered by a dispute over the election of a new local
government chairman in Jos North, the commercial center of Plateau
      state, Reuters reported.

Rival gangs burned churches and mosques, prompting the government to
impose a night time curfew on Jos. However, witnesses said attacks
continued in parts of the city despite the curfew.

"There are Hausas and Beroms who want to fight each other and the
army is in the middle trying to create a buffer zone. The intensity
is worse than yesterday," a resident told Reuters, asking not to be
      named.

Muslims and Christians generally live peacefully in Nigeria, Africa's
most populous nation with 140 million people. However, the Plateau
state has been the scene of unrest in recent years.

In 2001, hundreds of people were killed in ethnic religious fighting
in the streets of Jos, which lies at the crossroads between Nigeria's
mostly Muslim north and mostly Christian south.
