Jerusalem: New Settlement Project in Beit Iksa

      Hear Palestine - June 30, 2003

It was revealed today that a new Israeli settlement project is
expected to swallow up the entire land of Beit Iksa Village,
      northwest Jerusalem.

This morning, the 1600 residents of the village woke up in shock to
the roars of Israeli armored vehicles and municipality cars. An
Israeli captain of what is referred to as the "civil administration"
and head of the organization committee of Beit Ilksa settlement
informed the residents that their land and agricultural fields are
now in the hands of the occupation army and the settlers whose aim is
to establish a new settlement on the village's land (around 14,000
      dunums).

The captain informed the residents and their council that the new
borders of the village, starting from that moment, limits the
village's area to 1000 dunums that fall under what is referred to as
area B, and the rest of the property and land is now "State Owned".
As a result, owners are prevented from reaching their land and
      working on it.

The Israeli army leveled vast areas of land and placed placards that
read "Warning from the Israeli Defense Army and Civil Administration:
This land belongs to the state's absentees and whoever is found on it
      would be risking their lives."

Israeli media sources revealed lately that a new settlement called
"Alona" is to be established as a continuation of Ramot settlement
and other settlements established southwest Jerusalem.

The Israeli army during the past 7 months have established a number of
      settlement roads in the area.

The head of the village council said that the occupation army aims at
confiscating 14,000 dunums of the village's land to implement
settlement plans while leaving the residents of the village and
owners of the land without property and trapped inside a large prison
surrounded by settlements and settlement roads from all sides.

The head of the village council called on all international
humanitarian organizations for help in putting an end to these
blatant breaches of humanitarian and international law.
