      JALALABAD, June 3: Unknown assailants shot dead an influential Afghan
      tribal chief who was helping to persuade Taliban to work with the new
      government, police said on Saturday.

      Haji Mursalen was killed in a mosque in eastern Kunar province late on
      Friday, provincial police chief Abdul Ghafar said.

      "He was shot while praying. The enemies of Afghanistan were behind the
      killing," Mr Ghafar said.

      Mursalen had played an important part in the nation's reconciliation
      and had persuaded dozens of Taliban in Kunar, a hotbed for insurgent
      violence, to lay down their arms, the police chief said.—AFP


      Two gas pipelines blown up

      QUETTA, June 3: Two gas pipelines were blown up in Pir Koh area while
      power supply was suspended to Kohlu and adjoining areas after two big
      towers of 32kv Barkhan-Kohlu transmission line were damaged in another
      blast on Saturday.

      Over a dozen rockets were also fired at different check posts of
      security forces in Dera Bugti and Kohlu areas.......


      Levies man killed, three hurt in blast

      KHAR, June 3: A Levies soldier was killed and three others, including
      the political tehsildar, were wounded after a remote-controlled
      explosive device went off near here on Friday night.

      Officials said that political tehsildar Amir Zaman was patrolling the
      area along with some Levies personnel when they found a piece of
      luggage lying along the road some four kilometres from here. The
      explosion occurred as the Levies men were trying to unwrap the pack,
      wrapped with a piece of cloth.......


      Anti-terror force in Quetta attacked: Six killed, 13 injured

      and 13 others injured, six of them seriously, in five powerful
      explosions which rocked the firing range of the Police Training
      College near the eastern bypass area, here on Thursday.

      "It is an act of terrorism and the perpetrators had used booby traps
      to trigger powerful blasts," Inspector-General of Police Chaudhary

      Provinces asked to check water quality: Outbreak of gastroenteritis

      ISLAMABAD, June 3: The centre on Saturday asked the provincial
      governments to immediately constitute provincial and district
      committees and monitor quality of water supply to check the outbreak
      of gastroenteritis.

      Taking note of complaints about the outbreak of gastroenteritis in
      different districts due to consumption of unsafe water and
      non-observance of proper sanitation, the health ministry asked the
      provinces to form the committees and continuously monitor water supply
      at source, in supply lines and at user's end.......
