Israeli sniper shoots dead 75-year-old man on donkey

      5 March 2003 - Palestine Monitor (palmon@...)

At around 2.00 pm yesterday, Abdullah Shehadeh Al Ash'hab, a
75-year-old grandfather, was slowly riding his donkey, collecting
firewood near his property, when an Israeli sniper suddenly shot him
three times in the neck =96 killing him instantly, according to witness
      reports.

Al Ash'hab was from a town near Gaza city, situated close to the
illegal Israeli settlement of Netzarim. Soldiers, including snipers,
regularly patrol the borders of the settlement, ostensibly to
      "protect" settlers.

Al Ash'hab's farmland is situated about 400 meters away from the
      settlement.

"This was a disgraceful attack on a defenseless, eldery man," said
Nabil Abu Kameel, mayor of the town. "Abdullah did not even enter any
area that Israel claims to be `restricted' =96 he was simply on his own
land. But the Israelis shoot at farmers around here just to make their
lives so miserable and dangerous that they want to leave their land
and move away from areas close to the Israeli settlement."

"In addition to the daily shelling and firing at civilians, they
destroyed about ten wells in the area that were providing us with
drinking water and water for our farms," Abu Kameel continued. "They
destroyed some with bulldozers and others with dynamite. They also
constantly attack our water network with tanks."
