      Detainee struggle advances:
      European Parliament demands US Free all the Detainees;
      Hunger strike brings partial victory

The European Parliament on Thursday called on the United Sates to
release "prisoners against whom there are no retainable charges"--in
other words to release all the detainees, both in the US and at
Guantanamo, none of whom are charged with crimes. The Parliament
expressed specific concern about the detainees at Guantanamo,
calling on the US to "clarify" their status " immediately", and
release those not charged, which at the moment is all of them. The
news was reported in Friday's New York Times, p. A10.

We all can use this resolution to get similar resolutions passed in
local city councils and to combat arguments that "Free all the
      Detainees" is an unrealistic demand.

On the eight-day hunger strike that ended last week in Paterson: A
partially victory was definitely achieved, as the INS yielded to the
demands of five of the detainees and moved them to Hudson County
jail, where they will be able to visit with their families and where
conditions overall are considerably better than at Paterson. This
would never have happened without the support and press coverage
given to the hunger strikers and shows that the INS will respond to
outside pressure. Thanks to all who helped!

Unfortunately, the sixth striker, Farouk Abdel-Muhti, who was
demanding his release, has not won that yet. He remains at Passaic.
So we must keep the pressure on the government to Free All the
Detainees. The best way is to organize for the National Days of
Action on Feb 21 and March 28-29. Please tell us of local plans for
rallies at the INS or elsewhere. More on this soon.

      In solidarity, Eric Lerner
