      PESHAWAR, Oct 14: One of two Chinese hostages and their five
      kidnappers were killed in a spectacular commando action in the
      troubled South Waziristan tribal region on Thursday. The other
      Chinese hostage was freed unharmed.

      Officials said that Wang Peng, a surveyor with the state-run
      Chinese firm, Sino Hydro Company which is building the multi-
      million dollar Gomal Zam dam, had been injured during the
      Operation Shangay, when he took cover behind one of the five
      militants. Mr Peng, 40, was hit in the abdomen by a bullet and was
      seriously wounded. He died on way to hospital.....

      ISLAMABAD, Oct 14: Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Sherpao said here
      on Thursday that the commando operation to rescue the hostages
      held by militants in Chagmalai had been taken as 'a last resort'
      to save the Chinese engineers.

      "When security personnel heard the sound of firing from inside the
      (kidnappers') hideout, they stormed the place, killing all five
      kidnappers. Chinese engineer Wang Peng received injuries but could
      not survive," the minister said at a press conference.....

      Mastermind will be punished: Musharraf

      ISLAMABAD, Oct 14: President Gen Pervez Musharraf and Prime
      Minister Shaukat Aziz on Thursday conveyed condolences to the
      Chinese government and people over the death of a kidnapped
      Chinese engineer in South Waziristan and vowed that the
      masterminds of the kidnapping would be meted out severe
      punishment.

      In a message to his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao, the president
      vowed that the masterminds behind the episode would be meted out
      severe punishment. He expressed the nation's shock, indignation
      and sorrow at the hostage-taking incident involving two Chinese
      engineers working on the Gomal Zam Dam project.....
