      Top Taliban commander killed
      KANDAHAR, Sept 26: A senior commander from Afghanistan's Taliban
      militia previously held at a US base in Guantanamo Bay was killed by
      Afghan forces in the central province of Uruzgan, a senior official
      said on Sunday.

      Maulvi Ghafar was killed along with two followers in an ambush in
      the Char Cheno district of Uruzgan late on Saturday while walking to
      a district village, said provincial governor Jan Mohammad Khan.

      But Taliban officials denied the report, saying although two Taliban
      fighters had been killed, Ghafar was unhurt and that four Afghan
      National Army soldiers were killed in the incident.

      Maulvi Khan also said that Char Cheno district chief, Malem Wali
      Jan, was killed during an overnight Taliban attack on a joint US and
      Afghan forces convoy. -Reuters

      Monday, killing five soldiers and wounding 10 others, officials


      Arms seized in Waziristan
      PESHAWAR, Sept 27: Security forces during a successful search
      operation have recovered huge quantity of arms, ammunition and
      explosive from the hideouts of terrorists in the caves and
      makeshift camps of Asman Punga in South Waziristan Agency.

      According to ISPR, during operation underground tunnels and crawl
      trenches were also discovered. The arms captured by the security
      forces include automatic rifles, rocket launchers, rocket-
      propelled grenades, mortar bombs along with fuses, ammunition and
      various kinds of medicines.....(APP)


      House raided in Sukkur; 3 militants held

      SUKKUR/NAWABSHAH, Sept 27: A strong contingent of law- enforcement
      personnel arrested two brothers, said to be active members of the
      banned Jaish-i-Muhammad Organisation, after a raid on their house
      in a residential area of Sukkur on Monday morning.

      The arrests were made a day after security forces claimed to have
      killed Amjad Farooqi in an encounter in Nawabshah. The raid in
      Sukkur's Ansari Colony was conducted on information provided by
      the people arrested during the Nawabshah operation.....


      Need stressed for water treaty with Afghanistan

      ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: The technical committee on water resources has
      asked the federal government to immediately sign a water treaty
      with Afghanistan on river Kabul to base future irrigation planning
      on firm data.

      The committee's meeting was held on Monday and was presided over
      by A.N.G. Abbasi. It was briefed by Pakistan commissioner for
      Indus Waters Syed Jamat Ali Shah and member water Wapda M.
