Occupied Jerusalem: 1 October, 2003 (IAP News)

A noted Palestinian academic based in London has urged Israeli Jews
and Palestinian Arabs to reach a historical reconciliation by
agreeing to establish a unitary democratic state for Arabs and Jews
      in Palestine.

Ahmad Samih al Khalidi, an associate member of St. Antony's College
at Oxford University, argued that prospect of establishing a viable
Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip was increasingly
unrealistic due to the ubiquitous proliferation of Jewish
      settlements.

Writing in the British newspaper, the Guardian, on 29 September,
Khalidi pointed out that the resolution of the Palestinian question
via a territorial partition that would separate the masses of Arabs
from Jews was no longer possible.

"With an unbridled settlement policy now matched by an apartheid wall
that merely consecrates the divide between Palestinians and Jewish
settlers within the occupied West Bank, Sharon and his predecessors
have all but destroyed the possibility of a viable and sustainable
      territorial settlement along national lines."

He argued that by posting one homeland for both Jews and
Palestinians, the one-state solution not only does away with the
conflict over history and mutual legitimization, but has practical
      political implications."

"Israeli settlers wouldn't need to be removed from where they are
today. Jerusalem could truly become the shared capital of a unitary
      Arab-Jewish state."

The Zionist political-military establishment vehemently rejects the
one-state-solution concept since it is incompatible with the Zionist
concept of an exclusively Jewish demographic state.
