Anna Chapman's deep cover spying might seem quite suburban but the masters of espionage have been using lust to capture secrets for centuries.

Imagine the scene. You are a research assistant working for the government. Lank hair, lab coat and glasses. Big brain but very little sex. In fact you might not even get laid at all. Then one day into your lonely life of late nights at the lab and occasional drinks with your fellow geeks, comes Olga. She is beautiful, shapely and incredibly sophisticated. She is the most attractive woman you have ever spoken to. You are definitely punching well above your weight. You have done well. Of course you fall in love with her – what else are you going to do? And then little by little she asks you to do small favours for her – to tell her exactly what it is you work on. So you show off and you tell her, perhaps a little more than is wise.

And then she asks you to photograph some documents. By now you're getting suspicious. "But if you loved me you would," she says. Now you know that Olga is a spy and she is taking your pillow talk back to her masters. So what would you do? Risk exposure and go back to having no sex? No, you'd carry on taking the bait.

We are all familiar with the scenario from films and TV and comics and sitcoms. The honeypot seductress spy is an archetype: from Eastenders to Eva Marie Saint in North by Northwest to Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale and Tatiana Romanova in From Russia with Love there have been numerous villainesses who start as the seductive spy (and are often turned, or killed, in Bond movies anyway, along the way.) The sexy seductress who vamps her way into the beds of generals and ambassadors is a familiar figure from popular culture, but what of the real world of the honeypot? It turns out the deception is often more fascinating in the real world than in fiction and sometimes far more complicated, and even perverse, than just a sexy female seducing a male loner…

Earlier this year one of Gordon Brown's aides was the victim of a honeytrap on an official trip to China. The hapless official, a senior advisor, was one of twenty Downing Street staff who accompanied the Prime Minister and twenty five leaders of industry (including Richard Branson) to China on a two day trip. On the last night about a dozen of the Downing Street officials went to a party in a hotel disco in Shanghai where, according to one security official quoted in the Sunday Times, "It was apparently a lot of fun, there was quite a bit of dancing with lots of people on a big crowded dance floor.", The senior aide was approached by a young Chinese woman and after a while they disappeared together back to his hotel room. The security official said:

"In these circumstances it was not wise. Nobody knows exactly what happened after they left. But the next morning he came forward and said: `My BlackBerry is missing,' and the prime minister's Special Branch protection team were alerted."

Despite this sounding like the story of a light-fingered prostitute grabbing anything she could, a senior official who was contacted by The Sunday Times admitted the theft had all the hallmarks of a suspected honeytrap -– and that even if the aide's device did not contain anything top secret, it could enable a hostile intelligence service to hack into the Downing Street server, potentially gaining access to No 10's e-mails.

"Stories of honeypot operations frequently turn up the seedier side of life, hardly a surprise when you are mixing two of the most secretive areas of human behaviour: espionage and sex."

The incident provoked a lively internet debate after it was exposed, ranging from serious warnings like that from Joel Brenner, the US government's top counter-intelligence official, that: "many people going to China and going to get electronically undressed," to the slightly more sceptical comments like this from Graham from Durban in South Africa "I have to sympathise with this guy. Last Tuesday night I was picked up by a young lady and one thing led to another and the next morning I discovered she'd stolen 100 rand from my wallet. It happened again on Thursday night, then Saturday, and with any luck it will happen again tomorrow."

The first honeytrap in recorded history come in the Bible where the two honeypots in chief were Delilah and Judith. The latter seduced the enemy commander Holofernes and assassinated him, and famously Delilah seduced Samson and got him to reveal the secret of his enormous strength (his hair), before she went on to be immortalised in song by Tom Jones.

In the modern era honeypots (of both sexes) were used by both sides in the Cold War but perhaps because they were ultimately defeated, we know a lot more about the honeypot techniques of the KGB and Stasi (the East German secret police) than we do of the techniques employed by the Americans and British. In the Soviet Union, for instance, "swallow" was the KGB codename for women honeypots, and "raven" the term for men. An ex-CIA officer has claimed that the West "found that offers of money and freedom worked better."

Cases of female honeypots entrapping men are so common that even very recent history is littered with them. In 2006 the British Defence Attaché in Islamabad, was recalled home, after it was disclosed that he had been having an affair with a Pakistani woman, who was an intelligence agent for her government. At the time the British Government denied that any secrets were lost, although other sources maintained that several British agents working undercover in Pakistan, and several operations, were exposed.

One of the best known Cold War examples of the unlucky male being entrapped by female honeypot was the Native American US Marine, Clayton J. Lonetree who was a guard at the US Embassy in Moscow in the early 1980's. He was seduced by a female KGB operative, who was already working at the US Embassy as a translator. It later emerged that he allowed her to wander the corridors of the Embassy unsupervised late at night, and then when he was transferred to Vienna she threatened to expose their affair and blackmailed him into handing over detailed plans of the US Embassy in Moscow as well as details of operatives and CIA working practices in the Soviet Union. By 1987 it had become apparent that there was a major security breach at the Embassy and after an investigation Clayton J. Lonetree became the first ever member of the US Marine Corps to be tried for espionage and was sentenced by a military court in Quantico, Virginia to thirty years in prison.

Lonetree's sentence was later reduced to fifteen years after it emerged that many of the secrets it was presumed he has passed over to the KGB were in fact not given over by him, but by a much more serious American spy Aldrich Ames who had been working for the Soviets at the same time. In addition the commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Alfred M. Gray, Jr., recommended to the Secretary of the Navy that Lonetree's sentence be reduced because the Marine's motivation, "was not treason or greed, but rather the lovesick response of a naive, young, immature and lonely troop in a lonely and hostile environment." Lonetree was eventually released in 1996 after serving only nine years at the United States Disciplinary Barracks.

"When it comes to sex, and being loved, we are all very vulnerable indeed."

Probably the most famous and controversial female honeypot of recent years has been Cheryl Ben Tov nee Cheryl Hanin aka "Cindy" the Mossad agent who allowed herself to be picked up by Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu while buying cigarettes from a kiosk in Leicester Square in 1986. Vanunu had worked on the Israeli nuclear weapons programme for many years – itself a remarkable lapse in security by the normally scrupulous Israelis as he had, despite being a Moroccan-born Israeli citizen, been demonstrating with Palestinian friends against Israel's policies towards its Arab neighbours and citizens since his student days. That aside, the way they dealt with Vanunu once he crossed them was both brutal and ruthlessly effective in a way which characterises Israeli operations.

In 1986 Vanunu approached the Sunday Times and handed them sixty photographs proving Israel's possession of nuclear weapons. Informed opinion in the West had guessed that Israel had possessed nuclear weapons since the late 1960s but until Vanunu came along such claims could still be dismissed because of Israel's policy of "deliberate ambiguity".

After Vanunu came to London to hand over his intelligence the newspaper kept him hanging for three weeks while it attempted to gain water tight verification for what was going to be a global news story. During this time Vanunu became impatient and approached rival paper the Sunday Mirror with his story. At this point the paper's owner, Robert Maxwell (who was later to be buried on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem) tipped off Mossad, and Mossad decided to arrest Vanunu, but decided to do it off British soil to avoid embarrassing Israel's ally, then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

It seems trapping Vanunu was simple. Ivan Fallon, who was then deputy editor of The Sunday Times, has written in the Independent: "It soon became apparent that sexually he was still a virgin at 31 and desperate to change that status . . . The bright lights of London's West End and Soho held him in thrall." Mordechai Vanunu was "desperate to get laid".

American born Israeli Cheryl Hanin (who had the year previously married an Israeli intelligence officer, Ofer Ben Tov and since been recruited to Mossad, presumably for this specific mission) was dispatched to pick up Vanunu. She was given the cover name Cindy and dispatched to London. But Vanunu was such easy prey he threw himself into `Cindy's' hands.

"It was the honey pot trap," he later said. "She was standing in a place to buy cigarettes in Leicester Square and I saw her and talked to her. I asked if she was a Mossad spy. She said, `No, no, no. What is Mossad?"

To say Vanunu was naïve and horny sounds like an understatement. After a week long affair in London (presumably with the prior approval of her Mossad husband) "Cindy" persuaded Mordechai Vanunu to accompany her to Rome, where he was drugged by Israeli intelligence officers and transported to Israel aboard a freight ship. He stood trial in secret and was sentenced to 18 years in prison, 12 of which were spent in solitary confinement. Vanunu was finally released from prison in 2004 at which point he immediately stated that he still did not believe "Cindy" was a Mossad agent: "She was either an FBI or a CIA agent. I spent a week with her. I saw her picture. Cindy was a young woman from Philadelphia."

Vanunu now lives in Israel where it is claimed his mental health has suffered drastically from over a decade in solitary confinement. Cheryl Ben Tov has now reverted to the name Hanin and works as a real estate agent in Longwood, Florida, with her husband and their two daughters. After his arrest the Sunday Times published Vanunu's photographs and confirmed that Israel had indeed produced more than 100 nuclear warheads.

"The real world of the honeypot is often more fascinating, more complicated and even perverse, than just a sexy female seducing a male loner."

Stories of honeypot operations frequently turn up the seedier side of life, and even the frankly bizarre – which is hardly to be a surprise when you are mixing two of the most secretive areas of human behaviour: espionage and sex. There is the story of John Vassall for instance, the British Civil servant and homosexual who was posted to the Soviet Union in the mid 1950s as a Naval Attaché at the British embassy in Moscow. A year after his arrival KGB agents got Vassall ferociously drunk at a party and then photographed him having group sex with several men. The pictures were used to blackmail him and he became a productive spy for the KGB for almost a decade passing over thousands of documents.

Similar ruthless exploitation of people's vulnerabilities was exhibited by the East German Stasi who perfected the use of their "romeo" agents to target vulnerable women working as secretaries to powerful men in West Germany. Markus Wolf, the former head of East Germany's foreign intelligence service wrote in his autobiography, "When it began, I had no idea of the harvest it would bring." At least forty women were eventually prosecuted for passing secrets to their lovers, who were in fact Esat German spies – and the lengths and brutality of the exploitation were shocking.

One secretary to a governmnet minister was a former nun who refused to have sex with her `romeo' until after marriage – and so was given a false wedding by the stasi. "A Stasi officer played the priest, and took her confession," says Marianne Quoirin, the author of The Spies Who Did It For Love, "and later another officer played her mother-in-law at a small reception."

Quoirin quotes Gerhard Beier one of the Stasi agents who had many West German lovers who says "I was fulfilling my patriotic duty, and it wasn't unpleasant."

Gabriele Kliem, a lonely West German secretary who was engaged to Stasi agent Gerhard Beier for seven years – and in that time passed him many state documents – says the most painful aspect came when she discovered in court that all her love letters to Beier were passed to Stasi psychologists. "So they would sit and read and laugh and analyse and see how they could hurt me some more," she says. "To them I was just a laboratory rat or worse – and to him, I was just a tool."
Stories like this, like so much else from the murky world of the honeypot, bring it home that when it comes to sex, and being loved, we are all very vulnerable indeed.

Revealed: Assange `rape' accuser linked to notorious CIA operative
      By David Edwards
      Monday, December 6th, 2010
      http://www.rawstory.com/rs/201...pe-accuser-cia-ties/

One of the women accusing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of sex crimes appears to have worked with a group that has connections to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

James D. Catlin, a lawyer who recently represented Assange, said the sex assault investigation into the WikiLeaks founder is based on claims he didn't use condoms during sex with two Swedish women.

Swedish prosecutors told AOL News last week that Assange was not wanted for rape as has been reported, but for something called "sex by surprise" or "unexpected sex."

One accuser, Anna Ardin, may have "ties to the US-financed anti-Castro and anti-communist groups," according to Israel Shamir and Paul Bennett, writing for CounterPunch.

While in Cuba, Ardin worked with the Las damas de blanco (the Ladies in White), a feminist anti-Castro group.

Professor Michael Seltzer pointed out that the group is led by Carlos Alberto Montaner who is reportedly connected to the CIA.

Shamir and Bennett also describe Ardin as a "leftist" who "published her anti-Castro diatribes (see here and here) in the Swedish-language publication Revista de Asignaturas Cubanas put out by Misceláneas de Cuba."

Shamir and Bennett noted that Las damas de blanco is partially funded by the US government and also counts Luis Posada Carriles as a supporter.

A declassified 1976 document (.pdf) revealed Posada to be a CIA agent. He has been convicted of terrorist attacks that killed hundreds of people.

Ardin is "a gender equity officer at Uppsula University – who chose to associate with a US funded group openly supported by a convicted terrorist and mass murderer," FireDogLake's Kirk James Murphy observed.

In August, Assange told Al-Jazeera that the accusations were "clearly a smear campaign."

"We have been warned that, for example, the Pentagon is planning on using dirty tricks to destroy our work," Assange told the Swedish daily newspaper Aftonbladet.

The WikiLeaks founder said he was told to be careful of "sex traps." Had Assange fallen for one of those traps? "Maybe. Maybe not," he said.

Catlin observed that both Ardin and Sofia Wilén, the second accuser, sent SMS messages and tweets boasting of their conquests following the alleged "rapes."

"In the case of Ardin it is clear that she has thrown a party in Assange's honour at her flat after the 'crime' and tweeted to her followers that she is with the 'the world's coolest smartest people, it's amazing!'" he wrote.

"The exact content of Wilén's mobile phone texts is not yet known but their bragging and exculpatory character has been confirmed by Swedish prosecutors. Niether Wilén's nor Ardin's texts complain of rape," Catlin said.

Ardin has also published a seven step guide on how to get revenge on cheating boyfriends.

When the charges were first leveled in August, Gawker raised doubts that Ardin was working for the CIA.

"If anything, Ardin's outing tends to undercut Assange's conspiracy theory that one of his accusers is a major figure on Sweden's left fringe, freewheelingly indiscreet on her personal blog and, until her charges, an enthusiastic promoter of Assange's visit to the country," Gawker wrote.

After Interpol issued a digital "wanted" poster for Assange on Monday morning, an unnamed Scotland Yard source reportedly told Press Association it had been given the documents needed for the arrest. Police would not comment on the report publicly.

Several British news outlets speculated that Assange could be arrested as early as Tuesday.

On Monday evening, Mark Stephens, Assange's London lawyer, was negotiating with British authorities over an arrest warrant they'd received from their Swedish counterparts. Assange has vowed to fight extradition.

Reader Comment: Sex, lies and no videotape

As Mark Stephens, Assange's London attorney, had told AOL News this past weekend, Swedish prosecutors want Assange "not for allegations of rape, as previously reported", but for something called "sex by surprise", which Stephens said "involves a fine of 5,000 kronor or about $715". Stephens added, "We don't even know what 'sex by surprise' even means, and they haven't told us."

"Sex by surprise" is legally considered an offense only in Sweden. Anywhere else - including the US and the United Kingdom - quite a few women are rushing to clarify that if it really means what the definition implies, they more than welcome it.

Four charges are involved in the Assange thriller; one "Miss A", 31, a blonde, feminist, social democrat whom once wrote a treatise on how to take revenge against men, poses as victim of "unlawful coercion"; then sex with a malfunctioning condom; then "deliberate molestation"; and finally there's "sex by surprise" with one "Miss W", 27, an art photographer and avowed Assange groupie.

"Miss A" must have enjoyed the mess around, because even after the broken condom the first time, they were seen together the day after. And it was "Miss W" herself who invited Assange to her apartment - even paying for his train ticket. During the trip, Assange seems to have preferred his computer to her company - as the dejected groupie told police. Sex ensued, anyway - with no condom.

Supposing this is the real story, Assange too could have grounds for prosecuting; the resourceful groupie should have handed him both the train ticket and the condom. One thing at least is quite clear; gone are the days of free, independent and much-envied Swedish girls, now obviously replaced by guided-missile prudes.

It gets "girlish". The two women eventually get together to gossip - and realize they had something in common; sharing a bed with Assange. That's when "Miss W" suddenly became supremely troubled regarding her "unprotected sex" and decided to go to the police with "Miss A". The first prosecutor - a woman - issued an arrest warrant for "rape and molestation". She was overruled the day after by another female prosecutor. Then the current prosecutor - also a woman - reopened the investigation, claiming she had "new information".

Top journalist John Pilger, who along with legendary filmmaker Ken Loach and others offered to stand surety for Assange in the London court for over $280,000 (bail was denied), went straight to the point; "The charges against him in Sweden are absurd and were judged as absurd by the chief prosecutor there when she threw the whole thing out until a senior political figure intervened." Outside the Westminster court, Pilger summed it all up; "Sweden should be ashamed."

Whether this "senior political figure" has some shady Central Intelligence Agency-style designs is open to speculation. But the most absurd thing is that "Miss A" herself told a Swedish tabloid that she never wanted Assange to be charged with rape. Maybe she should tell that to the new prosecutor. Moreover, Assange's lawyer Stephens has said many times that his client remained in Sweden for 40 days offering to meet the accusing prosecutor to tell his version of the events.

European-wide laws list 32 violations - rape is one of them - that authorize extradition. Britain is just executing a request from Sweden. European lawyers stress Assange's best chance is now to accept extradition and face whatever justice rolls on in Sweden

Assange Case: Evidence Destroyed Over And Over Again
      By Göran Rudling, Radsoft
      http://www.countercurrents.org/rudling081210.htm

One of the women who filed charges against Julian Assange is Anna Ardin. She stood in the elections to the community council for the social democrats and she is a public person who should be examined. So I'll publish her name.

Anna Ardin is christian, feminist, social democrat, animal rights activist, and opponent of abortion on the left political scene. She's previously been in charge of equality issues for the student union of Uppsala University - a job she won an award for. Today she works for the Brotherhood Movement and 'burns for peace and justice... for a just, open society of solidarity'. On her own blog she describes herself:

'A political scientist, communicator, entrepreneur, and freelance writer with special knowledge within faith and politics, gender equality issues, feminism, and Latin America.'

On Saturday 14 August at 14:00 she wrote the following on her Twitter account.

'Julian wants to go to a crayfish party, anyone have a couple of available seats tonight or tomorrow? #fb'

Early on the morning of Sunday 15 August (02:00) she writes again at Twitter.

'Sitting outdoors at 02:00 and hardly freezing with the world's coolest smartest people, it's amazing! #fb'

When Anna Ardin files a police complaint against Julian Assange on 20 August these tweets are removed. Why? As far as I can tell, it's not common for victims of crime to delete blogs, clean up their cellphones, and try to get witnesses to attest to things that aren't true. Why is it so important to remove these particular tweets?

If you know that the 'reported molestation' takes place on the night towards 14 August, then it all becomes easier to understand. The tweets actually indicate that Anna really liked Julian and that there had been no molestation 24 hours earlier. You can't divine in the tweets that Anna Ardin thinks Julian has a 'warped view of womanhood and can't take no for an answer'. The tweets are more an attempt by Ardin to shine in the brilliance of Julian Assange. Why else would she publish them on the Internet? The tweets don't match Anna's story given to the police on 20 August. So she simply deletes them.

Proof That Anna Ardin Is Hiding the Truth

In the beginning of September, I note that Anna Ardin has two identical 'miniblogs' - one at Twitter and the other at Bloggy.se. It looks as if Anna Ardin's tweets are posted to both blogs at the same time. The tweets that are deleted from Twitter are still visible at annaardin.bloggy.se. Anna missed the fact that she has to delete on each and every blog. Bad luck.

To see if Anna Ardin is really trying to hide her Twitter tweets, I post a comment to Sara Gunnerud's article WikiLeaks Heroes Can Also Do Stupid Things. The article is published at the Rebella blog, a social democratic feminist blog where Anna Ardin contributes and runs the website. In my comment I mention the deleted Twitter tweets. After five days, on 13 September, my comment is reviewed and removed directly. I then post a new comment where I mention that one can read the deleted Tweets at annaardin.bloggy.se. My comment is removed directly. A few hours later the entire Bloggy.se site is taken offline. When Bloggy.se reopens at 04:00 in the morning of 14 September, the tweets deleted from Twitter are also deleted from annaardin.bloggy.se.

But it's not as easy to remove things from the Internet as Anna Ardin thinks. Google takes snapshots of how web pages look - so called caches. If you search for the cached page for annaardin.bloggy.se you can see what it looked like on 19 August. (If the cache disappears, click here.) Then you can compare the page with how annaardin.bloggy.se and twitter.com/annaardin look.

As we can see, Anna Ardin is doing all she can to hide her tweets. Tweets that indicate Julian Assange is actually innocent of at least the charge of 'molestation' that he's been accused of. It looks like Anna Ardin is doing all she can to get Julian Assange convicted. By deleting and denying acquitting circumstances, she's perhaps making herself guilty of false accusation.

Penal Code Chapter 15, 7 § A person who, otherwise than in 6 §, with prosecutors, police or other authority falsely testifies of a criminal act, provides compromising circumstances, or denies acquitting or mitigating circumstances, shall be found guilty, if authority review such a case, of false accusation to imprisonment not exceeding two years or, if the crime is petty, to a fine or imprisonment not exceeding six months.

The Assange case gets really creepy if we take everything that's happened into account. Anyone wanting to read more can see this article and this article. Julian lives in Anna Ardin's flat from 11 August until 19-20 August. During this time Julian and Anna have sex. Around 18-19 August Anna gets a call from a woman wanting to speak to Julian. When Anna realises that Julian's also had consensual sex with this woman, something happens. The two women who are both christians and are connected to the Brotherhood Movement and were at the seminar at the Brotherhood Movement realise immediately that Julian doesn't have any long term serious intentions with them. They decide after discussing the matter to file complaints against Julian Assange for sexual molestation.

It might seem strange that a christian social democrat feminist would avail herself of legislation to get revenge on a man who is 'unfaithful'. When you read about Anna Ardin's post about revenge, it's no longer strange. It's completely natural. Anna Ardin has for a long time wondered how she can exact revenge on a man who dumps her, is unfaithful. When the other woman turns up, she has the opportunity to do something about her ideas. Anna Ardin plans it all well. She gets another woman to make the actual rape accusation. A case of 'revenge by proxy'. And then she gets help from Claes Borgström who's done all he can to try to get Julian Assange put on trial, frenetically cheered on by the feminist blogs.

But the truth wins out in the end. Anna's perfect 7-Step Programme for Legal Revenge failed. One deletion too few. And the Google cache. Too bad, Anna. The ways of the Lord are truly mysterious.

I'm very surprised that christian feminist 'equality' women can so idolise a WikiLeaks hero that they do all in their power to get him into bed as soon as they have the chance. And then, when they realise he's not as interested in them as they are in him, go to the police and accuse him of rape. This demonstrates an extreme contempt for the women who are real victims of violence and sexual crimes. Their behaviour is unconscionable.

If you're a groupie at heart, why not just try to keep quiet about it? It's nothing you should spread on the net or go to the police to talk about. As things look now, Anna Ardin's carefully planned character assassination and revenge on Julian Assange amounts to nothing more than a suicide bomb on her foot. A bit unlucky for Anna that Google cache keeps track of things like an Internet god. If you're going to delete, then delete good and proper.

All that remains is to see what the preliminary investigation leads to. According to the prosecutors:

'The investigation is well advanced and only a small number of investigative procedures remain to be taken before a decision.'

If the prosecutors conclude that this is a case of false accusation, then hundreds of thousands of men who claim most rape complaints are false will win their argument. This will unfortunately also lead to making it much more difficult to get justice for real victims. That would be a catastrophe.

But something good will come out of this story. We are going to learn that just because you're christian, feminist, social democrat, animal rights activist, and opponent of abortion, it doesn't mean you believe in equal rights for women and men.

Göran Rudling, born in 1951, is the editor of Samtycke Nu/Consensus Now, a site promoting sexual self-determination that uses the motto 'it is a human right to decide for oneself when and with whom we are going to have sex'. Rudling is a frequent contributor to Newsmill where he writes about the need to introduce democratic laws that are based on sexual activities needing to be consensual to not be considered criminal.
