Canada in shock as 'Toronto 18' member pleads guilty

A Canadian member of the "Toronto 18" has pleaded guilty to plotting to blow up nuclear power stations and a spy base in the country.

The ''Toronto 18'' is a group arrested in 2006, which prosecutors
accuse of planning to truck-bomb nuclear power plants and the spy
      building.

Lawyer Russell Silverstein said Saad Khalid on Monday became the
first member of the group to plead guilty, the Associated Press
      reported.

''Pleading guilty is sometimes the best route to a just result, and
those are the circumstances in this case,'' said Silverstein.

The Canadian prosecutors can call Khalid to testify against the others.

A 2006 crackdown by 400 Ontario police officers resulted in the
arrest of the 22-year-old Khalid and his 17 associates who are charged
      with fostering 'terrorism'.

The target buildings were supposed to be hit with explosive-laden
trucks. The 18 had allegedly tried to obtain three tons of ammonium
      nitrate to realize the plan.

Legal proceedings are also due against the alleged head of the group and nine other suspects.
