Sorry to hear about your loss and the especially the violation of
your home. I have not had to experience that in a long time, but I
know the feeling. I hope that the police find those responsible.
Someone needs to invent an inexpensive GPS based Lojack type system
that can be embedded in to PCs, laptops, and other expensive
equipment. Ideally it could use the low bandidth celluar systems to
send back information to a server. Given the developments over the
past 5-10 years, the unit cost could be quite low.
A less complicated setup (but less effective) solution might be a ET
phone home stealth software application that can ping a server. In
that way, if anyone ever hooks up the system to the Internet, the
authorities could track it down.
Nothing would give me more satisfaction than watching some punks that
broke in to my home squirm at sentencing.
