      Jaye Ellen,

The history retrieval on the WS-36XX can take a good couple of
minutes as the entire history must be read from the console before a
determination can be made as to how much of the history is useful.
WUHU will read out all 1750 weather records before extracting the
      useful data.

The WS-36XX consoles have a fairly slow interface to the PC as it
uses the handshake lines for communications rather than the normal
character based serial communications schemes. The history read is
also a very CPU intensive operation because of this.

The WS-23XX series stores only 175 records and has a method for
determining the range of the history so the retrieval process is much
      quicker.

The Davis is also much faster as you can tell the Davis software what
part of the history you are interested in.

When using the WS-36XX or the WS-23XX you must use HW Pro or HW Beta
to setup of the logger's history interval. Your history interval
should be set to capture the most amount of data for your expected
down time. On a WS-36XX a 5 minute interval will capture 145 hours of
      weather data.

Right, I have the 3610 station.  But, me being one impatient old lady, my eagerness overcame me and I tried to skip the first parts.  I probably screwed everything up, but it seems to have settled down.  I am confused .. about HW and/or HW Pro ... if neither of them is used, what happens?

          Jaye Ellen,

You do not need to be concerned about skipping the retrieval as your
computer was not down for an extended period of time. If your
computer is down for say a whole day, then it would be important to
          allow it to finish.

The HW Pro (for the WS-36XX consoles) and the HW Beta (for the WS-
23XX consoles) allow you to set the history interval in the console
itself. This tells the console how often to store weather data in to
          it's internal memory.

Since WUHU never makes any changes to the console (never writes
data), you must using the programs from La Crosse to achieve this.
When you want to run HW Pro or HW Beta, you must exit WUHU as they
cannot share the serial port at the same time.

Again you've got me up against a blank wall.  My main usage is WU; given a choice between HW and WU I choose WU every time.  Is it absolutely necessary to use HW  and why, for WUHU uploads only?  Still VERY MUCH confused,

The HW Pro (for the WS-36XX consoles) and the HW Beta (for the WS-

              Jaye Ellen,

There are only a couple of things that you need the HW Pro software
              for:

              1) Set the history interval.
              2) Reset the rain total.

Since WUHU never modifies the console settings, you need HW Pro for
              this purpose.

Other than that, you do not need to run HW Pro to communicate with
the console or upload your data.

One other function that you might use HW Pro for is viewing large
sets of history files (if you are even capturing history to your
              local hard drive).

I would not be concerned with setting your history interval as it
probably defaults to 5 minutes anyway.

So, simply put (my favorite way), I can leave it like this, and hopefully if there continues to be large blocks of failed uploads, it'll be more easy to find out the why's and wherefores?  No answer  necessary ...
Thank you for all the help!
