Occasionally, I run across someone trying to get rid of perfectly good computers. A lot of folks don't feel comfortable throwing them in the dumpsters, so they are looking for people to take them off their hands. Don't get me wrong, these are not bad computers, but they are not the latest greatest for whatever they are trying to use them for.
Thats where we come in. APRS does not take much of a pc to get up and running, depending on what software we use. I have run UIVIew32 with full precision mapping and weather radar overlays with a Pentium II 450, but it was ONLY running aprs and I wasn't trying to do anything else processor intensive with it.
I also see tons of 15 and some 17" CRT monitors at yard sales for little or nothing because they upgraded to flat screens.
I mention this because I want us as hams with aprs interests to use all our resources. I know lots of aprs users that install the software on the main pc in the house. These are computers that are shared with the XYL, kids, etc.. but with a little digging there is no reason we couldn't get a dedicated aprs machine up and running in our ham shacks or offices for little or no cost.
I hope this helps get users motivated to either get a dedicated aprs pc up and running, or help other hams that don't have the resources and get them online and enjoying this digital mode.
Anyone with friends at colleges and schools is a really good place to start as they are always upgrading computers, and again have no good place to get rid of the old ones.
Just some ideas I wanted to share with everyone. Lets all have a great summer and be safe out on those roads.
