Welcome to the group.
There are lots of opinions about Igates. I run an Igate in Jackson and
@ my QTH in Lexington, TN. The only other Igates in the West TN area are Memphis WB4EPG-7 and Union City WB4YDL-2.
In my opinion, you are in an area that needs a 1-way Igate. The definition of a 1-way Igate is one that passes traffic from RF
(144.390) to the internet.
A full blown Igate send traffic from RF to the internet and traffic from the internet to RF. This can cause lots of traffic, but its up to the consensus in your neck of the woods on running a full 2-way Igate.
To setup UIView as a 1-way Igate is really easy. Follow these simple steps and you should be up and running.
Of course you have to have a full time 24/7 internet connection to be a full time Igate.
Click SETUP, APRS SERVER SETUP Put X's in the top right 3 boxes under Gate RF to Internet Remove any X's in Gate Internet to RF In the bottom left pane make sure all X's are in there You also have to have your Validation # in there
Extra Log on Text is where you send the filter command to the aprs server but it depends on which server and port you are connected to. I use filter m/200 that gives me stations within 200 miles of my QTH when I am connected to Port 14580 which is a filtered port.
If you are connected to an APRS server when you make these changes, then click ACTION, Disconnect from APRS Server, then click ACTION Connect to APRS Server.
Press F1 while the APRS SERVER SETUP window is open, and read all the
help files that pop up at least twice. The software author went to a lot of trouble in the help documentation area. It is an invaluable source of info no matter which screen you have open in UIView. Pressing F1 brings up relevant help for whatever windows you are viewing.
Again you will get lots of opinions on Igate setups. If you try the above instructions and run into any trouble let me know.
And always check with other stations in your area to see if its ok to run an Igate. Its always best to keep the peace whenever possible.
Hope this helps, Richard KB4YTM
