      WS_OVERLAPPED doesn't actually do anything - its value is zero. If you see WS_OVERLAPPED listed in Spy++, it just means "not WS_POPUP or WS_CHILD". My guess is that you intended to create a child window but forgot to specify WS_CHILD.
