  • Birders, I stopped on the road and check Ridgway Reservoir at about noon. The Willet was still there, along with at least two Franklin's Gulls. At the Billy Creek Wildlife Area bridge was an Am. Dipper and a Black Phoebe. Both have nested there in the past. Kent Nelson Ouray

  • Hello, birders, I visited Ridgway Reservoir again this afternoon and was surprised to find 8 Franklin's Gulls, along with 10 California Gulls, one Willet, one breeding plumaged Common Loon, two American Avocets, 3 Cinnamon Teal, 4 Green-winged Teal, and 40 Western Grebes. A Western Bluebird was at the entrance to the mudflats. Good birding. Kent Nelson Ouray

  • Hello, birders, Conditions were blustery at R'way Reservoir today, but there were a few birds -- 50 Western Grebes, 4 Ruddy Ducks, 1 female Common Merganser, 4 Blue-winged Tear, 2 Cinnamon Teal, 12 Gadwalls. No gulls. My feeder in Ouray had a Lesser Goldfinch a few days ago and yesterday a Lincoln's Sparrow, but mostly there've been siskins, Cassin's Finches, and Evening Grosbeaks...

  • Birders, After being in SC for a month (Swallow-tailed Kite is always fun to see), I have my pathetic feeder up again. Two days ago I had what appeared to be a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak -- striped breast, pink bill -- which I've had the last three years. And I finally got Evening Grosbeaks, which I haven't seen all winter. This photo is of an odd one. Good birding. Kent Nelson...

  • Hello, birders. I birded Ridgway Reservoir this afternoon. Not a lot of birds, but the highlight was a Red-breasted Merganser. Others were 10 Common Goldeneyes, 6 Common Mergansers, and 1 Hooded Merganser. Below the dam was a Belted Kingfisher. Kent Nelson Ouray

  • Hello, birders, I went back today with permission to get closer to the barn where, yesterday, I found the Barn Owl. The bird was not there. Also checked again at the R'way Reservoir, and it was quite different from yesterday afternoon. Today there were 20 Common Goldeneyes, 20 Common Mergansers, 10 Shovelers, 2 Gadwalls, 40 Eared Grebes, 2 Common Loons, 1 Western Grebe, 2 Hooded...

  • Hello, birders, I checked Ridgway Reservoir today and had the usual suspects -- 10 Common Goldeneyes, 2 Hooded Mergansers, 4 Commons, and a Bald Eagle. But on my way back, I detoured on a county road and saw what looked like a bird eating something at the top of a haystack in an open barn. I stopped and I scoped it. The light wasn't good, as it was under the roof, and at first I...

  • Hello, birders, This afternoon, Judy Scheig and I did a short circuit of Ridgway Reservoir, the Uncompahgre River, and Ridgway environs. The highlight was watching a Peregrine Falcon harass the gulls at the reservoir. It made several passes, flew around for several minutes, and came back. Once it was as close as about 30 yards. There wasn't much around, though we found a Spotted...

  • Hello, birders, Yesterday, Sue Hirshman and I found a Lewis's Woodpecker at the top of County Road 5. Alas, the Saw-whet Owl that nested up there two years ago, was not in the same hole. It's probably late for it to be there, even if it nested again. We had a few warblers along the road, too. Our best bird was a Yellow-breasted Chat a little south of the Dennis Weaver Park. Today...

  • Birders, I never know whether reporting birds is relevant or merely egocentric. Who cares about birds in Ouray except Sue Hirshman and me? Anyway, for the past two days, in addition to 20-30 Evening Grosbeaks and up to 10 Black-headed Grosbeaks (along with siskins and Cassin's Finches), I've had one female Rose-breasted Grosbeak, maybe the same one from last year. She's come in off...
