  • Birders, It's been a more exciting week in Ouray County, at least for me. On Friday, a Lewis's Wp was near the heron rookery on 550, and over the weekend I had a N. Goshawk at Elk Meadows above Ridgway, along with a dark Red-tail on Cty Road 5. Then today, at Ridgway Res, there were three Herring Gulls, one Bonaparte's Gull, two Coots, several Common Loons, one Pacific Loon, a...

  • At 11 A.M., after a snow shower, a single Brown-capped Rosy-Finch was at my pathetic feeder. (Photos of this bird and the Rose-breasted Grosbeak). Kent Nelson Ouray

  • Hello, birders, I've been away from Ouray for a month, but got my feeder up on Tuesday. Yesterday evening a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak appeared, and she returned this morning. The bird is whiter beneath and streaked, and has an all-pink bill. A Bullock's oriole, first-spring male also came to the sunflower seeds. Odd. Otherwise, the usuals -- siskins galore, Evening and Black...

  • Hi, birders, There was a Black Phoebe today, 50 yards downstream from the Billy Creek SWA at the north end of Ouray County. Three Turkey Vultures were in the air over Ridgway State Park. My pathetic feeder in Ouray is getting 20 Evening Grosbeaks every day, plus a few Cassin's Finches and other expected birds. Two Red-winged Bb females came today. Good birding, Kent Nelson Ouray

  • Hello, all, Judy Scheig and I birded the Ridgway Reservoir, the banding station up the river from the reservoir, the swan pond at Guadagno's old house, and the town of R'way this evening. Highlights were 1 Marbled Godwit, 6 Western Sandpipers, 5 Spotted Sandpipers, 1 Wilson's Phalarope, 3 Baird's Sandpipers, 4 Semipalmated Sandpipers, and a Loggerhead Shrike at the reservoir, 2...

  • Hello, birders, This afternoon at Ridgway Reservoir there were 20 Red-necked Phalaropes, 6 Franklin's Gulls, 4 Bonaparte's Gulls, 7 California Gulls, 3 Green-winged Teal, 1 Great Blue Heron. No Western Grebes. In Ouray yesterday I had 15 Brown-capped Rosy-Finches at my feeder. Today zero. I'm still getting 20 or so Evening Grosbeaks. A Hermit Thrush was on my walk a couple of days...

  • Birders, all, Since Sue Hirshman and I saw some good birds at the R'way reservoir on Saturday, I thought I'd try again today. (I can take my work with me -- the joy of writing fiction.) There were 65 Western Grebes, 4 Mallards, 2 C. Goldeneyes, and 1 American Avocet. That was all. I then sat at the R'way bird banding area for a while, and after an hour a Black-throated Gray Warbler...

  • Hello, all, Sue Hirshman and I decided to use the nice weather to see if we could find a few birds everyone else has been seeing. We started at R'way Reservoir, where there were two White-faced Ibis, two Long-billed Dowitchers, four Franklin's Gulls, and a Willet. There were also a few ducks, including G-w Teal, Blue-w Teal (yesterday), and Cinnamon Teal, maybe 50 Western Grebes...

  • Hello, all, I've been whining to myself about the dearth of birds in Ouray and envious of all your reports from here and there. I've had hundreds of birds at my feeder, but only four species -- junco, siskin, Ev. Grosbeak, and Cassin's Finches (16 males two days ago). Today I rode my bike around -- it's sunny for the first time in a week -- and at the north end of Oak Street I...
