  • Hi All, This is an abbreviated report on the field trip conducted by the Black Canyon Audubon chapter on May 8th and 9th. Weather conditions were pretty good on the 8th, but a bit breezy. Today it was cold, raw and wet, but we persevered. We traveled to Miramonte Res., Dry Creek Basin, Paradox Valley, San Miguel River near Uravan, Nucla and Wright’s Mesa with a quick stopover in...

  • Hi All, So, based on recent posts by some WSBN regulars I visited Fruitgrowers Reservoir today. Spent no more than an hour, and boy what an experience. Been to Fruitgrowers several times, and it always produces some good finds, but today was exceptional. Here’s the incomplete list. Clark’s grebes – 2 swimming close together doing that head-bobbing thing – no dance...

  • The first turkey vultures showed up today in Montrose. Maybe the strong SW wind blew them in. • On Jon Horn’s suggestion I visited Otter Pond south of Montrose around 11 am today. Sunny, calm conditions. Hundreds of Canada geese. A lot of mallards and ring-necked ducks, 20 + common goldeneyes. 10 shovelers. Found the 2 male and 1 female Barrow’s goldeneyes Jon reported. Not on Jon’s list and seen today was a male Am. widgeon, a pied-bill grebe and 1 female common merg...

  • Hi all, Couldn’t make the Delta bird count on Saturday, but did check out Confluence Park on Sunday. The large park pond was loaded with the usual Canada geese along with a dozen or so Ross/Snow geese. A few pied-bill grebes and 20 or so common mergs were actively diving. I like to go along the river along the north edge of the park in search of goldeneyes. No luck with...

  • Hi All, Andrea’s post reminded me that mtn. chickadees are very much a part of my feeder scene. They, along with juncos, are the first to visit the feeders in the morning. We usually see 4-6 of them. They are quite tame as well, sitting on a nearby branch scolding us as we hang the feeders in the morning – pretty bold little critters. • White breasted nuthatches were a rare visitor to my yard feeders until this winter. Since about a month ago 1-2 white breasted nuthatches visit my feeders several times a day and also use the open water pool we maintain. It’s been fun seeing them, and hope they stick around in the summer. We live on the edge on Montrose in a suburban area that has become more filled in with...
