  • Just saw a 1st year female Magnolia Warbler in my yard. This bird had me puzzled until I got great looks at white undertail coverts and white on underside of tail going about 1/2-2/3 up the base of tail. Other field marks where narrow wing bars, bright yellow breast and belly, and green back. It has been pretty slow birding otherwise around here past couple days! -- Jason Beason...

  • This bird was at a pond along the North Fork of the Gunnison River adjacent to Paonia River Park this evening. Jane McGarry called me about it this afternoon so went to check it out. Interestingly, I did a search on eBird and this bird was seen by a reliable observer on July 2nd at same location. Hint: not a species you usually get to see in western Colorado in summer! -- Jason...

  • This morning (5/15) while running errands I did a quick stop at Fruitgrowers Res on the North Road causeway. There was one Black-bellied Plover flying around with 3 Willets and vocalizing frequently. It eventually landed in NE corner and I got good looks with my binocs. I didn't have my scope unfortunately. A flock of WF Ibis flew in as I was leaving. No other shorebirds of note...

  • At a friend's place outside of Paonia this morning I heard a singing Fox Sparrow along Minnesota Creek. Probably not a place where they breed but it seems they will sing during migration. Also at home saw my first Tree and Violet-green Swallows. Jason Beason Paonia - Delta County

  • We had 5 enthusiastic participants today and after a little morning rain it was a very pleasant day. Overall, about the same number of raptors as reported yesterday and we ended up with 11 species (Cooper's Hawk and Merlin were not seen yesterday). We got great looks at one of Jim and Jane's Long-eared Owls at Trollhagen and another flushed as we entered the area. We saw one...

  • Stopped by Cheney after a meeting in Grand Junction today. I saw Northern and Loggerhead Shrikes at the same time which was a first for me. They were perched to the south along the fence next to the very large "480 acres for sale sign". Also saw one Ferruginous Hawk on the drive to the reservoir. 26 Ring-necked Ducks were the only waterbird present on the water. -- Jason Beason...

  • Some friends and I visited a back-country yurt near Lake City Saturday and Sunday. The amount of dead spruce trees was sad but the number of woodpeckers foraging on them was very impressive. Most abundant species was American Three-toed Woodpecker and Hairy and Downy woodpeckers were also present. Besides the woodpeckers birds were not easy to find and I encountered a few Brown...

  • I stopped by Confluence Park briefly today. I saw one male Barrow's Goldeneye with the many Common Goldeneyes on the main lake. Among the thousands (3000+) of Canada Geese was at least one Cackling Goose (that I could pick out anyway). I also counted 77 Snow Geese on the ice. There were four that looked smaller but I wasn't sure if they were Ross's Geese. They never did un-tuck...
