  • Greetings, Geese, Ducks, Cranes, Coots, and Killdeers all begin moving as soon as ice begins to thaws and the snow melts. The earliest passerines to make a move north are the phoebes. Today we were surprised to find another species already on territory and three males were singing near Nucla. Brenda was able to get some photos and they are attached. I bet you can figure out what...

  • Greetings, Today Brenda and I checked out Ridgway Reservoir retuning to Nucla from Montrose. We did turn up a Horned Grebe in the southeast corner of the reservoir near the highway. Present were lots of Common Goldeneyes and Common Mergansers and one Pied-billed Grebe. Present were at least 3 Western Grebes. As far as I can determine there are no records for Horned Grebe in Ouray...

  • Greetings, The gull at Ridgway Reservoir is a Lesser Black-backed Gull and is only the 4th record for western Colorado. There are many photos available on the internet if one types Lesser Black-backed Gull into the toolbar. Gulls are difficult because it takes several years before some species reach adult plumage. Field guides are limited because they do not show some (many) of the...

  • Greetings, Brenda and I drove to Montrose today and stopped by Ridgway Reservoir and found three gull species. Two were the expected, California and Ring-billed Gulls. The third was not expected but we did figure it out after a little effort (lot of effort). We have attached some photos so you can have our experience at trying to ID this gull. A Common Loon was present at Ridgway...

  • Greetings, I agree that the duck is a Surf Scoter. I suspect it is a first winter female. One photo shows a little white on the nape, however. Great to have photos of those difficult to separate species.
