I ventured out early this morning to finish up Sharp-tailed Grouse lek counts on Trapper Mine reclaimed lands. Total count for this year was 134 strutting males on eight active leks and assorted satellite leks. That number is down somewhat from last year—likely due to the severe drought last spring thru fall.
Other interesting birds, encountered while doing a little post lek count wandering around, included three large birds in a reclaimed hay field that turned out to be two Long-billed Curlews and a Marbled Godwit; a pair of Burrowing Owls in the same area; a Bonaparte’s Gull on a sediment pond; FOS Orange-crowned Warblers on territory in mountain brush habitat (and not much else); and FOS Cliff Swallows.
