This evening I check the Nucla Town Reservoir for nighthawks. I found only a few Common Nighthawks. There was a Greater Yellowlegs on the shore, however. On the reservoir were about a dozen Common Mergansers, both males and females. I suspect they may go to the rivers shortly to nest as most rivers are quickly falling.
At the sewer ponds the nighthawk show is still great. Between 3 and 4 hundred nighthawks came to feed just after 8:00 pm and were still feeding when in left at 8:45. I had very good looks at several Lesser Nighthawks. One Ruddy Duck is summering on the ponds. What a summer vacation!!!!!
We are doing Brenda's BBS route tomorrow. Not too early of a start for us, however, as the route starts in Nucla. How lucky can we be!
- There was i bird at 4pm at the Redlands Parkway North pond today. An Eared Grebe was seen at the adjacent gravel pit pond on 23 1/4 Rd. This bird has been alternating between these 2 ponds for the past 3 days. My last BCHU was seen at my yard on 9/19.Turkey Vultures continue at the nearby roost tree.Bob Bradley
