Home Lake is still snow/ice covered, but the canal on the north side has open water. Today (March 4) there were 50-60 Common Mergansers and a Great Blue Heron in canal, and an imm. Bald Eagle and a Merlin on north side of canal The SWA on the north side is now close (breeding season).   County Rd 3 has some raptors - Rough-Legged and Red-tailed and Bald Eagle, but did not see any owls. A big concentration of Sandhill Cranes is west of County Rd. 3, off Rd. 7. Despite warmer weather, there still isn't much open water on the refuge but lots of Can. Geese and Mallards have moved in, but just a couple of No. Shovelers so far. Could not spot any Cackling or Snow Geese. Here and there, a few Robins, Mourning and Eur.-Collared Doves, and plenty of Starlings, of course.
