Field Trip Announcement - Oct. 28th
- Western Slope Birders,
The BCAS will be hosting a field trip on Oct. 28th in the Gunnison area. We have been having some problems getting our newsletter out so I just wanted to pass along the information.
October 28th Barrow’s Goldeneye and the Kokanee Salmon Run from Blue Mesa Res. to Roaring Judy
Meet at 8 am at the parking area just south of the junction of Highway 149 and 50 on the east end of Blue Mesa Reservoir. From there we will scan the reservoir for Barrow’s Goldeneye, loons, and scoters. We will check the waters edge for vibrant red Kokanee Salmon preparing to make the run up the Gunnison River. We will then carpool stopping to check for waterfowl in the upper Gunnison canyon and make a quick stop at McCabe’s wetlands for dabbling ducks, dipper, and to check the river for salmon. Finally we will end up at Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery, the final spawning destination for the salmon and watch as they make the final run up the narrow fast flowing channels, perhaps one of Colorado’s most bizarre annual migrations. Numerous Bald Eagles gather here to feast upon the salmon.
