Welcome ladies and gentlemen, kids and all. Welcome to another edition
of Around The Ring, and as always I am your loyal host, Eric. "If I
could be serious for a minute..." I have something to say. I appreciate
everyone who takes their time to read my column when I put one out. And
I do appreciate everyone who has signed up to receive my column. I also
appreciate any comments and/or criticism you may have that will help me
be better at what I do. However, what I don't appreciate is someone
sending me criticism with an overwhelming theme that I suck as a writer.
We are all entitled to our opinions, but if you want to help me,
politeness counts. And that someone knows who they are.
      Enough said on that tip.

The last Brainbuster poll was a run away. I expected it to be a little
closer, but Bret Hart ran away with the win.

Bret Hart vs Kurt Angle: Who do you think would win?

      68.2% - Bret Hart
      31.8% - Kurt Angle

      Bret Hart Wins!!

This being my 50th issue of Around The Ring, I should be happy. Some
would call this a milestone. However, I can't celebrate this milestone
in my writing career. In the last week or so, we have lost two legends
in this business. nless you have been living under a rock, every
wrestling fan by now has heard of the deaths of Stu Hart and Michael
Hegstrand, better known as Road Warrior Hawk.

I can't say I knew Stu Hart at all, not like fellow columnist Jason
Clevette knew Stu. I have seen tapes and read about Stu. And as we all
know, Stu produced several wrestlers, most notable, Bret The Hitman Hart
and the late great Owen Hart. Stu also trained some of the wrestlers we
enjoy and have enjoyed in years past. It is a true loss to the sport of
pro wrestling. I couldn't even attempt to do
a better write up than Jason.

I can't really say I knew Hawk either, but I met the man. As anyone who
has followed my columns knows, I went to one of the opening shows for
the XWF. November 14th, 2001 is a day I will never forget. The show
started a little late, so to appease the small crowd of about 500, they
sent out some of the wrestlers to sign autographs. Now, not to overlook
any of the wrestlers, as I appreciate what they do for my
viewing entertainment, I expected to see a lot of guys I had never heard
of or maybe had seen or heard of once or twice. Boy was I wrong!

Big Vito, Konnan, Virgil(Vincent), Jerry The King Lawler, Hacksaw Jim
Duggan and many others. And then, there they were...The Road Warriors.
The guys I have watched for years on tv. From their battles with the
Fabulous Freebirds to The Powers Of Pain and so on. Animal signed my
little note pad and had moved on. Hawk was overwhelmed by fans and just
missed me. There was a gentleman there that was helping
people to get wrestlers attention to get them their autograph and a
picture. Well he asked me if I wanted Hawks autograph. What am I, an
idiot?! Of course I want that! So he managed to get Hawks attention and
pointed me out. Hawk came back to me and apologized for missing me and
gave me a big bear hug. He signed my notepad and took a picture with me.
He took a minute to talk to me and see how I was
      doing. A real class act.

I read a recent interview with Animal where he talks about the lost of
his partner and best friend of over 20 years. It was a really good read
and if you haven't read it, I will try to get permission to post it on
      my site.

I have watched The Road Warriors/Legion Of Doom for 20 years as I said
before, and seeing them twice as far as I can remember. Once at
Wrestlemania 14 and then at the XWF. As far as I go, you hear certain
stories about some of the wrestlers not being very nice in person, or
whatnot... you never know what you're going to get. And having watched
this legendary tag team, I wasn't sure what to expect when
I met them. Animal...he was nice enough, but you could tell his head was
somewhere else...on like what he had to do or business or whatever. But
Hawk...he was like a free spirit. This isn't meant to be sappy, it's the
truth from my prospective. It was like he didn't have a care in the
world. When I met him and he gave me a hug, it was like we had known
each other for years, but hadn't seen each other in awhile. He made me
feel very special, like I was a friend of his. Unless it is something
you have experienced yourself, it is really hard to describe. I know
Hawk had heart/health issues and had undergone surgery before I met him
but seemed to bounce back, lost weight and was in great shape. He looked
great and seemed to have a new found zest for life.

As Road Warrior Animal said in his interview: "Hawk wouldn't want people
crying about him." I don't cry about him. Instead I prefer to remember
the entertainment he and Animal both have given me over the years. And
also, I prefer to remember Hawk as the man I met just a few years ago
and the life long memory he gave me. For all of this I want say thank
you Hawk and you will be truely missed.

I am going to move on and talk about Smackdown and the PPV.

Well as far as No Mercy goes, I got 4 out of 7 matches that I knew
about. Had I known about the Bashams vs APA, I would have gotten that
one wrong too as I would have picked the APA. Oh well. I am a little
disappointed with my most of my predictions. I guessed that Zach Gowen
would win and he did. But in all honesty, I wouldn't have been surprised
      if Matt had won.

The John Cena vs Kurt Angle match really could have gone either way. I
am glad Angle won. But it would have been nice to see Cena win the

Four out of seven...not too bad. I batted over .500 so I am not too
unhappy about it. I will have my day soon.

As for Smackdown, I really have to give WWE some props. In regards to
the passing of both Stu Hart and Hawk, they were really on the ball with
their tributes. And not just the quick flashes of the pictures. And
considering Vince and Hawk had a rather tumultuous relationship which is
why I was surprised when the LOD showed up on Raw. Unfortunately they
didn't look the greatest although the short time they
had for the match was a factor. The WWE didn't sign the LOD but I think
as far as Hawk cared, it didn't matter.

So the new GM is Paul Heyman. What a surprise! That was a well kept
secret. WWE has its moments. Hopefully things get better with Heyman
"running" the show, but then again...

I have to say the show was decent. The first match, Chris Benoit and
Kurt Angle vs John Cena and A-Train was incredible. You don't get a
better tag team than Angle and Benoit. They should make this a more
permanent team, instead of creating a feud, to help the tag team
      And speaking of which...

The Basham Brothers are the new tag team champions? What?! The Guerreros
are where it's at! One of the most sound tag teams WWE has. Not to
mention they are a complete riot. But it looks like they are going to
      start feuding Chavo and Eddie.

It's good to see that Shaniqua didn't go overly huge with her new
implants. It would have looked twice as bad as it does now.

It was definitely good to see that goof Scotty 2 Hotty. It has been so
long since I have seen the W.O.R.M. Yes I know it is ridiculous, but I
get a chuckle out of it. The shame of it all is the fact that Scotty and
Rikishi get such a reaction from the crowd, and yet they are stuck at
      mid card level.

I am glad to see Tajiri getting this push. I am also interested in
seeing where this angle goes with this new Japanese trio. That was a
sick looking Rock Bottom/Sweep they did on Zach Gowen. When I read it on
the spoilers I thought they were just doing the Kronus and Saturn move.
      But this is different!

I saw the commercial for the new Smackdown video game. Can we get a
Brcok Lesnar vs Torrie Wilson in a Bra and Panties match??

Well they tried everything in the book to screw the Undertaker out of
his choice of match at Survivor Series, but it was to no avail. The Dead
Man wouldn't be denied and he got his way. Vince vs Taker in a Buried
Alive match at Survivor Series. That will be an interesting match

Well I will stop for now and move onto the:
