YIRRA YAAKIN – INDIGENOUS PARTNERS
UWA Perth International Arts Festival
Journey with us...
Date: 6th February 2004
Venue: Government House Gardens
On Friday the 6th of February, at the Government House Gardens in Perth, the Noongar Community will welcome Kimberley Mob to Noongar Budjor (land).
Following a Traditional exchange, Wangkajunka elder Spider Snell, will then lead Kimberley dancers in a Corroboree, on the Ngurrara Canvas. This ceremony will lay the foundation for safe passage, both spiritually and physically for our visitors from the North.
Yirra Yaakin would like the Indigenous community of Perth to be a part of this historic event, in solidarity and celebration of the Welcome to Country by the Noongar Nation. For those from Noongar Country and for those who are on Noongar Lands, there will be areas marked around the Ngurrara Canvas for you to be a part of the Welcome. This is not a performance but a ceremony to welcome Mankaja Artists to Noongar country.
For the Non-Indigenous community observing this exchange, narrations will be provided by Barry McGuire and Jenny Bedford, to provide a strong context to the public elements of the Welcome.
Those that wish may proceed to the second stage of the overture at the Forecourt Perth Concert Hall at 7.45pm to hear a thousand – voice choir accompany projected images of Journey, by Ian De Gruchy. Then for the third and final overture, watch as His Majesty’s Theatre receives a facelift by son-et-lumiere to celebrate its 100th Birthday.
Yirra Yaakin invite you mob to join us afterwards from 7.30pm – 9pm, to unofficially host our guests. This is a free event for the whole community – Celebrate with us!
