Letter09, Letter10, Letter11, so they will sort properly. You don't want to
delete the wrong version. (Otherwise it might sort like 1, 10, 11, 12, ..., 19,
      2, 20, 21, ...)

And in regards to the automatic file creation - could it have something to do
with the auto-file saves from the preferences for WP?

I get one or more _xx files in a work session, but they're never more
recent than the named file. They also turn out to be not the active
_xx file, which remains invisible (except momentarily during Save).
WP seems to just abandon them and start a new _xx file, at which
point the old _xx file stays visible.

I use WP timed backups, but not the original file backup. Does anyone
having different symptoms, like the _xx file being more recent, use
        either auto-backup feature?

Any chance the increased frequency of these _xx files popping up is due to Spotlight? John R's "accessing spotlight from Classic" post in the midst of this thread reminded me of a post on Macintouch about Spotlight causing multiple instances of Firefox's bookmark files (this bug has the details: <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294584>)
