      Fred,

What a wonderful set of cameras!  I have just had a dig around amongst my materials and the only Shew advert I can find is a full page in "Photograms of 95" which shows a number of cameras but the smallest size described for any is 1/4 plate.  If you would be interested in a scan then let me know.  It shows the Focal Pane Eclipse and the Featherwight Camera (which I have never seen).  Other ads reproduced in the 'Photographic Advertising from A-to-Z" series also only identify 1/4 as the smallest size.

Perhaps your gorgeous baby sized version was a special order item only?  And clearly a very scarce camera.

I have three Shew cameras, all of which are 1/4 plate: an Eclipse, a Aluminium Xit and a Koi-Xit.  The latter is a little less common, being the usual pattern Xit camera with aluminium front panel but with the wooden body hidden beneath a leather overcoat - so something of an imposter on this list!

      Regards,

      David

A couple of weeks ago I said I would send  photos of my small Shew collection in response to Ralph London's wonderful collection of 5. Well, I am a bit later than the few days I promised, but nevertheless, here they are.

The first is a typical 1/4 plate Eclipse. It is unbadged. It does have the Shew engraving on the focusing lever, and the original wooden viewfinder with Shew engraved on the top cover.

The second is a lovely "Postcard Xit" model of 1904. It is badged by the retailer, Sinclair, London. The lens is a Ross Combinable 10 1/4 inch f11
set in a Deckel Compound shutter.

The third is a very rare Xit. A small 1 7/8 x 3 inch plate format. Tiny in comparison to the 1/4 plate in the second photo and even more so in relation to the Postcard Xit.

If anyone has any Shew literature or catalogues I would appreciate any information on a listing for the tiny Shew. In my searches of old BJPA's and other literature, I have never been able to find this size listed or advertised. And as far as I know, Ralph's and mine are the only two examples known. If anyone has any information about others, I'm sure that both Ralph and I would be happy to hear about them. I would very much like copies of any Shew price lists, catalogues, etc. and would be happy to pay for photocopies and postage. And...if anyone has a tiny plteholder for the littlest Shew - I would love to have another, since I have only one.

Best to all of you and a Happy Thankgiving.
      Fred

        Hi

Does anyone have, or remember seeing, an alluminium bound Shew Eclipse. I have one in 5” x 7.5” format. I don’t remember seeng any others. They seem to be unbound generally.

I also have an ebonised wood and alluminium bount Xit, which has a military number on it. I have not seen one of those previously either.

        Best Wishes,

        John

I also have an unmarked camera that may just be a featherweight Shew. I am doing some research to try and find out. But the ads are no help. The drawings are too small and indistinct.

                G'morning y'all,

I don't think I'm breaking any confidences, but it appears that neither Rob nor Ralph is available for comment . . . and since I played the role of shadkhen (look it up) to a number of current and former Xit owners, I can confirm this much . . . Rob's and Ralph's itty-bitty Xits are one and the same.

In fact, I'm claiming credit (no matter what lies Rob may tell) for Rob's itty-bit Xit becoming Ralph's itty-bitty Xit - via an extraordinarily complex set of Xit-exchange transactions about 8 months ago that saw a half dozen spectacular Xit cameras coming and going through my kitchen in the course of several days.  To this day, I'm not sure who, if anyone, made any money on those deals - certainly, not me, as I do this as a purely magnanimous pro bono benefit to all mankind - but for a moment, Tualatin, Oregon, had became the Xit capital of the world.

And, without divulging any monetary details, other than Ralph breaking a long term CD and Rob eventually winding up with a Canon G10 and summer home on a lake, everyone seemed happy and Rob's Xit now resides in Ralph's collection . . . although not in the same spot where I last saw it.  It's getting harder to memorize Ralph's collection as he continues to shuffle things around.
At any rate, I'm sure Ralph will be happy to provide technical details when he frees up.  And, Marcel, I'm sure Ralph would be delighted to send you detailed pics of one of his plate holders to display next to your camera.  Such a mensch he is.
