Group Description

This group is dedicated to the Vanagon Camper model offered in the US in model year 1985-1987. It was also offered with the 'Syncro' 4-wheel drive system in 1986 and 1987.

The basic Camper model was a Westfalia conversion built on a Vanagon without a trim package installed (non-GL) and is a simpler type of camper. It came without the built-in appliances that the GL Campers of the same era had; instead offered a full width rear seat that folded into a queen-sized bed, a rear facing jump seat behind the driver, a rear cabinet, a removeable Dometic refrigerator and an auxiliary battery.

These vehicles were converted by Westfalia on the same production line as the more common GL Camper and some have the "Z" character in the 4th position of the VIN which designates them as Campers. Some also have an "X" character which is the designation for a Kombi model. Please vote in the poll to let us know which character you have in your VIN.

Most (but not all) of these Campers had 'Wolfsburg Edition' badges on the front fender, hence the name of the group. The 1990-91 Vanagon Multivan offered a similar layout as did the Eurovan MV with the 'weekender' package.

If you own one of these campers or would like to find out more about them, please join or browse the public areas of this group.
