      Greetings Folks,

I'm the incoming constable for Rivenoak and one of my first duties is
to create a "Constable Kit" for the office. I've got the various
waivers, clip boards, pens, ect. but I was wondering what sort of
"tricks of the trade" other constable might have that I should
      include.

      Thanks for the assist,

      Gregor Arthurson
      Constable Rivenoak.

Here's a list that I was forwarded to me by one of my Barony's old
        constables.

        *Constable Box Check List*

3 flat-clip clipboards, one of distinctly different color so I can
use that for the guest (comp) sign ins. 2 is enough for most purposes.

5-10 pens--cheap, but make sure they write

         1 roll duct tape

1 roll marker tape--you know that neon plastic stuff we use to mark
        off areas on site*

1 piece poster board, folded into quarters (for making signs)*

small battery-powered LED lantern* (they have a really nice one at
Walmart for $5, it can flash in red also)

         20 blank multi-signature waivers

         10 blank multi-minor waivers

         5 minor medical auths

         6-8 8.5x11" manilla envelopes--for full waivers/collection of money

         magic marker*

         staple gun*

         constable's banner/tablecloth

         constable baldric or tabard

         flashlight or two

         flashing warning lights

         2 family channel 2-mile radios*

         Hastings' Lock*

         sunscreen

         folding hat*

         t-tunic*

         rain poncho*

sm plastic box to use as a cashbox if there's nothing else to use

         bank bag*

         notepad

         pad of post-it notes

20 or so feet of strong cord

         dog leash*

grocery bag to use for trash at the gate

small steel flask of mead* (no, I'm not kidding, but it's really,
really optional--for when you get OFF gate)

         folding chair and table**

         cashbox**

         Sunshade**

        * I consider these optional, but handy especially at larger or overnight
events. The garb is if I happen to roll onto site and find out for whatever
        reason "I'm it."

**Not in the bag, but you need it for the gate

Seed money for the gate should be arranged at least two weeks in advance.
Oh, and if you're going to run the Gate, don't depend on waivers in the bag,
make them fresh. The ones in the bag are for emergencies, like running out,
or finding that whoever the C-in-C is has dropped the ball

            OKAY!!!!! LOL
As the West Kingdom Constable I would say that's a little crazy for a small event that most constables will need.  While all these things would be great to have,
these things I do believe you need.
            ***SIDE NOTE***
Seed money should be requested 3 WEEKS in advance.  Time is needed to get the requiered signitures on the check.

            3 flat-clip clipboards

            5-10 pens

Extra Waivers (all the diffrent ones)

            constable's banner/tablecloth

            constable baldric or tabard

sm plastic box to use as a cashbox if there's nothing else to use

            bank bag*

            folding chair and table.

All these items are a must for any small event.  If you are the CiC (Constable in Charge at a large event (i.e. principality or Kingdom) You should be able to get most of the rest from your Prospective Constables. If not, let me know. I can get the kingdom's gate stuff to you.
If you are a Boy scout and have the room for the extra boxes of stuff go for it.

If you have never been a CiC of an event then it's time to get you trained. I realize I have a lot of stealth constables out there and some small group constables that have not had this oppertunity.  I highly encourage you to vollenteer to Co-CIC an event so that you know what all is involved.
If you are interested please contact me off list. I will put together a list of Constables that would like the training (or just event constable training) and arrange to have you hook up with a senior constable.
            ***SIDE NOTE***
you NO longer have to be box /exchequer warrented to sit the box anymore. You need only be a paid member and trusted to handle the box.

Thank you Gregor for posting this up. the list is good knowledge.

                    Hey, now...

Okay, I admit to overpacking for things--it's the sort of person I am. But
except for the table/sunshade thing, it really DOES all fit into a single,
easily carried small soft briefcase sort of bag with a shoulder strap. In
fact, you've probably seen the one I use at events.

And every single thing on that list is something I've used, or wished I had
to use, on more than one occasion. Yes, even the leash. And yes, truly for
local events it's overkill...but my list isn't just for local events. It's
also for "Hey, look, I got to Crown early and...what do you MEAN there's no
one to run the Gate because the Kingdom Constable decided to experiment with
new and exciting ways to disperse motorcycle-caused kinetic energy?" (very,
                    very big grin)

Actually, you were there at October Crown, though at the event any number of
Seniors, myself included, were about ready to duct-tape you into your chair
so you didn't go meandering around the way you were, delaying your healing.
And we were quite ready for you NOT to be there--hence the kits.

My own kit-building actually dates from well before your time as CoW--old
events, years back, when things weren't as nicely stable and organized as
                            they are now.

And as I re-read some earlier messages in this thread, I wanted to
re-emphasize something else Sven said, about requesting seed money early.
As it happens, I am married to the current Cynaguan Excehquer, and it REALLY
makes it easier for everyone concerned if the event Exchequer can mail out a
check to use for seed money, rather than trying to deal with someone
bringing money of their own, and having to be reimbursed after the fact, and
all. It's just a good financial practice. Pulling cash out of the drawer
                            for on-site reimbursements is a big-league no-no...

Subject: Re: [West Constables] New Constable looking for basic kit suggestions
