Minus leprechauns, man faces 8th OWI charge

45 MINUTES AGO  •  LA CROSSE TRIBUNE

Just when he needed them the most, leprechauns abandoned Joseph H. O’Connell of Eau Claire.

Now O’Connell needs a good lawyer more than good luck in fighting a charge of OWI eighth offense Oct. 6 in the town of Bloomer.

      According to a criminal complaint:

A deputy was dispatched to County SS in the town of Bloomer on a report of a man knocking on doors asking for help getting his blue Jeep out of a ditch.

O’Connell, 50, of 1522 Woodland Ave., told a deputy he had a few beers at a tavern in Chetek. O’Connell said he was not driving the jeep but there was no one else with him.

“The leprechauns were driving me home,” O’Connell said, adding that the leprechauns had lost their pot of gold and had gotten lost driving him home from Eau Claire.

His preliminary alcohol breath test registered at .220, well above the 0.08 level of intoxication for a first time drunken driver in Wisconsin.

Judge James Isaacson scheduled O’Connell’s next court appearance for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 26. He ordered O’Connell to take daily alcohol breath tests in Chetek. O’Connell also posted a $450 cash bond.
