sorry for the "me too" type of post but this highlights a major design issue
hypertext is cool and all, but sometimes it can seriously disrupt reading
so the refer back is a good idea
another way to do it is to keep the footnote references close to the
referring paragraph, so the refer back is not as necessary
i like the way it's done in www.tbtf.com -- very unobtrusive, very chic
reminds me of that ryan guy, he does it the same way in his posts
