      At the June 20 Board meeting repealing the decision favoring
      Fairmont as the lead site for the new middle school a six week site
      selection criteria development process was announced. To date, we
      have not seen notice of these meetings anywhere and valuable time is
      passing (so far 1.5 weeks since the Board meeting and still no word
      to the public about the path forward). When will the meetings
      commence, what is the process for notifying the public about these
      meetings, and where will public notice be made? We have heard
      nothing from the District on this process. Objective criteria that
      are objectively developed and weighted will be a key factor in the
      site selection process. Criteria should include:

      - ensuring broad public involvement in decision making (again,
      proper and comprehensive public notice);

      - selecting a site that is safe for students and teachers;

      - recognizing that schools are centers of community and as such
      should enhance neighborhoods that host them (this means enabling and
      supporting shared community use and providing infrastructure that
      benefits the whole and revitalizes neighborhoods);

      - balancing community and environmental impacts (e.g., traffic,
      noise, safety, fairness in sharing the burden of impacts across the
      community and not creating disproportionate impacts in lower income
      areas with higher numbers of renters -- in other words socially and
      environmentally just factors);

      - fiscally sound decision making;

      - siting the school at an adequately sized property to ensure
      student fitness opportunities, academic excellence, and growth in
      enrollment; and

      - clearly establishes what's in and out of scope (e.g., if the scope
      excludes considering sites outside El Cerrito, let's get that out
      front and in public, but such decision making should be supported by
      transparent, rational and thoughtful decision making)
