*WCCUSD Students to Participate in Summer Program at Brown University*

Three students from El Cerrito High School and two students from Kennedy
High School have been selected to participate in Brown University’s
Leadership Institute, a two-week on-campus residency designed to help
pre-college students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed
to practice socially responsible leadership. The Leadership Institute is
a component of Brown’s Summer & Continuing Studies Program, and provides
high schoolers an opportunity to experience life on Brown’s campus in
      Providence, R.I.

The chosen WCCUSD students are Yoline Banerjee, Malcolm Carson and
Lauren Kane from El Cerrito High School in El Cerrito, and Andre Ellis
and Ana Garibo from Kennedy High School in Richmond. Applicants for the
Leadership Institute were asked to provide a record of superior academic
achievement, letters of recommendation that confirm a high level of
motivation, and a personal essay explaining their interest in the
program and the ways in which they hope to benefit from their

The students will depart for Providence on Saturday, June 24, and will
return on Saturday, July 8. During their two weeks at Brown the students
will complete a course that focuses on the academic content area of
their choice, including Leadership & Conflict Resolution and the Civil
Rights Movement. Participants learn about major policy issues in their
chosen area of study, and develop the skills needed to facilitate
discussions, solve problems in group settings, manage differences in
leadership style, and practice effective public speaking.

Students will live in Brown’s residence halls during their two-week
stay, learning through interaction with faculty, undergraduates, peers,
alumni, and expert resources from inside and outside the Brown
community. Classmates will share quarters with students from other
Leadership Institute courses, and Leadership Fellows will serve as both
resident advisors and teaching assistants. The Leadership Institute also
holds Community Time events in the evenings, where students from all
courses continue discussion from the classroom and learn core leadership
      skills together.
