      Students considered unready for future

"High school reform was a hot election topic last fall, when it seemed
every politician had an opinion on modern education. But California's
nonpartisan Legislative Analyst cut through the political hyperbole Monday
with an unflinching report that damns and gives hope at the same time.
More students are dropping out of high school than going to Cal, UCLA or
any four-year university. Forty percent of the state's community college
students need remedial English and math. Even the creme de la creme are
taking Bonehead English at UC because -- despite good grades in high school
-- they are unable to do college-level writing."
