Richmond Rotary Meets at DeJean Middle School
On April 29 DeJean Middle School hosted members of the Richmond Rotary for
their weekly lunch meeting. To get an authentic experience, Rotary members
decided to go through the lunch line and eat what the kids eat. "We enjoyed
the experience," said Rotary President and former WCCUSD superintendent
Herb Cole. "Lunch was good, but Heidy's stuff is always good." After
eating lunch in the DeJean Media Center, the Rotarians were treated to a
tour of the school's state-of-the-art campus.
Conference for Parents of English Learners
WCCUSD EL Services and the Parent Institute for Quality Education are
presenting a free one-day conference for parents of English learners on
Saturday, May 7, from 8:30-1:30 (lunch included) at Ford Elementary School.
The conference will focus on providing parents with the tools they need to
be involved in their children's education, help their children succeed
academically, and help plan for their children's careers. There will be a
resource fair at the end of the day. Parents can register at their child's
school or at the conference. For more information, contact the Parent

2005 English Learner Service Reclassification Ceremony
WCCUSD English Learner Services will recognize students who have been
reclassified from English Learner to Fluent English Proficient at the 2005
ELS Reclassification Ceremony. Presented by the Multilingual District
Advisory Committee and the Registration, Placement and Assessment Center,
the ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 19, 2005, at the Helms Middle
School Gym, 2500 Road 20, San Pablo. The program, which begins at 6:30
p.m., will include musical entertainment, community speakers, winners of
the Student Writing Contest, and presentation of awards to the reclassified
students. Seating will begin at 6:00 p.m.
2004-2005 Retirement Recognition Reception
The WCCUSD Retirement Committee will honor district retirees at the
2004-2005 Retirement Recognition Reception. The reception will be held on
Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at the Mira Vista Country Club, 7900 Cutting Blvd.,
El Cerrito, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by Local #1, RASA,
SSA, WCCAA, and WCCUSD. Tickets are $25, and can be purchased by sending a
check to Toni Mattson in the Accountability and Information Technology
Systems office by May 31, 2005. Checks should be made payable to WCCUSD
Retirement Fund. Tickets will not be issued in advance, and reservations
will be checked at the door.
Children's Health Insurance Enrollment Event
Families with children under 19 can determine their eligibility for
Medi-Cal or Healthy Families when the Health Plan Coalition of Contra Costa
County, West Contra Costa USD, and the City of Richmond Mayor's Family
Health Insurance Initiative present a four-day event to provide assistance
with children's health insurance enrollment. From May 17-20, the Chavez
Elementary School Healthy Start Initiative will host this event to assist
children who are legal permanent residents or U.S. citizens to enroll in
no-cost or low-cost health insurance plans. Parents do not need to be
permanent residents or U.S. citizens for their children to qualify.
The Health Plan Coalition of Contra Costa County is a coalition of Healthy
Families/Medi-Cal participating health plans (Contra Costa Health Plan,
Blue Cross of California, Blue Shield of California, Health Net, and Kaiser

Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Hercules Public Library
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Hercules Public Library will take place
on Civic Drive, across from Hercules City Hall, on Saturday, May 14, 2005.
Presented by Mayor Frank Batara and the Hercules City Council, the ceremony
will run from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. Please

City of Richmond Announces Schedule for R.E.A.C.T. Classes
The city of Richmond's Richmond Emergency Action Community Teams
(R.E.A.C.T.) citizen training course will begin on May 14,
2005. R.E.A.C.T. trains citizens to respond to and recover from a major
disaster. The free class will be held in the Community Center at Hilltop
Mall, 2200 Hilltop Mall Road, from 9:00-11:30 a.m. on May 14 and 21 and
June 4, 11, and 18, 2005. For more information, go to
