      BALLOTS DUE JUNE 8, 2 LOCATIONS FOR SUBMITTING IN WEST COUNTY

      If you have not returned your ballot in the Measure B election, there is
      still time. Ballots can be taken to the county Elections Department in
      Martinez. There will also be two drop-off locations in West County on
      Election Day only. If you're considering mailing it, please keep in mind
      that it must ARRIVE in Martinez by 8 p.m. June 8. For more information, see

      SPEAKER OFFERS ADVICE ON EDUCATING AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS

      Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, a lecturer and author of 22 books including "Countering
      the Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys" and "Black Students: Middle Class
      Teachers," spoke to parents and educators May 27 at the Richmond
      Auditorium.. Kunjufu urged parents and schools to work together, but said
      the fault for low achievement by African American and Latino students stems
      largely from low expectations by teachers. He offered a number of
      suggestions for improving the situation. See

      TEACHER HAS SILKWORM EGGS TO SHARE

      Substitute teacher Irene Thompson has many silkworm eggs which will be
      refrigerated for next spring's crop. Silkworms show us the insect life
      cycle and provide an example of a sustainable form of agriculture. If any

      FOURTH GRADE RESOURCES ONLINE

      Teachers and other interested parties are invited to join in a project to
      develop a website devoted to resources supporting the fourth-grade

      LOVONYA DEJEAN LIBRARIAN RECEIVES GRANT

      Lovonya DeJean Middle School Librarian Grace Jenkins has received a $5,000
      grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries. The money
      will be used to purchase much-needed social studies books for the school's
      state-of-the-art library.

      DEADLINE EXTENDED TO PURCHASE TICKETS FOR A'S FUNDRAISER

      The deadline to purchase A's tickets to benefit WCCUSD school programs has

      CONCERT JUNE 5 PROMOTES FUND-RAISING CD

      West Contra Costa Unified School District students and TAJ will perform at a
      free concert, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 5 at Nicholl Park, 32nd &
      MacDonald, Richmond. The event is a pre-CD release event for TAJ's "Speak on
      it." Bronar Records will donate 20 percent of the proceeds of all sales of
      "Speak on it" to the WCCUSD music program. TAJ, known as "The Lyrical
      Preacher," performs gospel hip hop.

      BOND OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE MEETS JUNE 23

      The next meeting of the WCCUSD Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee for
      Measures M and D will be 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, at the Facilities
      Operation Center, 1300 Potrero Ave. (Corner of So. 13th Street and Potrero
