It's all for one and one for all in Albany, where parents from three
elementary schools have banded together to raise money for academic extras
like art, music, poetry and chess.

      They had no choice.

Last year, the Albany school board made a divisive and controversial
decision that it was no longer acceptable for parents to subsidize
instruction at the district's two affluent schools while the poorer school
went without those things. The board suspended enrichment programs that were
      funded by parent donations.

The joint fundraising enacted this year means that each school, Marin, Ocean
View and Cornell, will get exactly the same amount of money per child to
supplement the standard educational programs offered during the school year.
The Albany plan stands in stark contrast to what's happening at most
schools, which benefit financially if the parents have the financial means
or lose out if they don't.
