West County children in need of school supplies lined up Wednesday to collect free
backpacks during a back-to-school giveaway in partnership with the Center for Human
Development, Walnut Creek-based PMI Mortgage and the Richmond Public Library.
      Organizers handed out 300 packs.

Third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at King Elementary in Richmond in need of backpacks
will receive them Thursday, as several businesses — including Chevron and energy
companies the Fluor Corp. and WorleyParsons — will give out 180 at the school.
Similarly, the Bay Area Rescue Mission is collecting paper, calculators, crayons, glue, spiral
notebooks, markers, highlighters and Bibles in an effort to give away 1,500 packs full of
      supplies.
