WVN ALERT: Special Town Meeting
- Dear Wayland Voter,
One last reminder about the Special Town Meeting on Wednesday, and a response to a question from some WVN readers:
Why is the meeting scheduled for the same night as the first presidential debate?
WVN isn't aware of any discussion of a scheduling conflict before the selectmen set the date. On Aug. 22 petitions signed by more than the necessary number of Wayland voters were filed. State law required the meeting to be held by Oct. 6. The Oct. 3 date was voted by the selectmen on Aug. 27. The schedule of the presidential debates had been published by July 25.
These things happen.
So this is also a reminder to set your TV recorder or make arrangements with someone else to record the presidential debate for you so that you can do your part at the national as well as the local level.
The Special Town Meeting is important. But it is likely to be efficient (with private electronic voting) and relatively brief (only seven articles to cover and a room full of people who want to catch the presidential debate, which begins at 9 p.m.).
Town meeting veterans are optimistic that if the meeting starts on time, voters can be home in time for some of the 90 minutes of live debate coverage.
